Still pisses me off lol
I don't care that he's the 6th defenseman on a bad team..
I still prefer him over Mackey or our other 7th defensemen

The QO for Valimaki was $1.86 million.
Guess he felt he wasn't going to get that so settled for $1 mil

At $1 mil he'd probably still be a Flame.

Right? Why not have a first round pick vs Mackey, Desimone, Gilbert, etc
I would be happier saying at least the first round pick is a player for us, despite not living up to the potential of a first round pick vs him doing well elsewhere.

Good for Juuso. I don't really care about the Calgary ramifications at this point — just happy for him.

At this stage, first round pick means nothing. He was behind all of those guys (in the AHL!).
If he can truly turn it around, good on him, but I don't see this signing as any evidence of a "mistake" from the Flames. At worst, it's a "meh".

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

Essentially they didn't choose Mackey, Desimone or Gilbert over Valimaki. They all got sent down, Valimaki was the only one claimed.

Agreed. It is a one year extension for almost league minimum on a really weak team. I don't see this as a huge endorsement for Valimaki. It's basically just buying him more time.

$$$$$ he made too much money
Getting a league min contract with one of the worst teams in the league isn't exactly living up to potential. He obviously didn't think he he would be qualified

This is a pretty obvious situation to me. Coyotes like the player and wanted to lock him down cheap for another year before his TOI/role increased with Chychrun and Gostisbehere gone. Juuso likes the fit and the coach and wanted stability after having missed so much time early in his career (and knew he wasn't in a spot to command more than his current AAV).
Nothing worth humming and hawing about. The only reasonable response to this news, to me, is to be happy for a player who's still working to get established in the NHL again after terrible injury luck.

They did Mackey didn't they?
Thought they kept Mackey off waivers and put Valimaki on waivers. And TBH based on AHL play last year, and training camp this year that looked like the right call at the time.
To me it reinforces that you don't know what a guy is at the NHL level until you actually play them at the NHL level for a stretch of games.
And also with Mackey he looked better in his NHL time in 20-21 and 21-22 than he has in his 9 games this year. Almost felt like he was nervous and regressed a bit to start this year.
Based on the previous 2 years of sample at the AHL, and training camp Mackey looked like the safer bet. That is clearly wrong at this point.
And the flip side is probably that Valimaki needed that fresh start in a new organization without the pressure and expectation of being a first round pick that the GM was super high on.

I don't mind any of them. They're in the mix for the 8th D when you account for Kylington.

They chose Mackey over Valimaki for his camp for sure.
But since then have exposed every one of them on waivers. (is what I meant)
