Wait a minute, I was told that Jarnkrok would be an immediate and significant upgrade on Monahan...Concerns around faceoffs and the fact that he hasn't actually played much Centre in the NHL were dismissed.

I think SM and CJ could actually have played well together (when judged with appropriate expectations for the roles) and mitigated each others deficiencies. Probably not enough to tip the scales of this series, but then again a few timely faceoff wins may have done just that.

He is an upgrade over Monahan, when Monahan was healthy this year the guy looked like a 4th liner....

Likely to many injuries over to many years and it has taken a toll,

When was Monahan healthy this year? His other hip needed significant surgery. He was never close to healthy. If he was fine we wouldn't have traded for Jarnkrok.

We do have this years edition of Sean Monahan still on this team, his name is Tyler Toffoli.

Slow, plodding, always a step or two behind the play. Fanning on shots, losing puck battles, shooting it into the goalies crest, or wide. Playing with no confidence, bobbling pucks, giveaways, plays continually dying on his stick.

I don't miss Monahan and I'm certainly not enjoying Toffolihan thus far.

Well of course, however problem is the player is injury prone...

Jarnkrok, clearly has not produced, defensively he is fine....

Monahan is not the same type of an impact player, that he was a few years back

However hip surgeries will take a while before its back to 100% (if ever)

If Monahan's hip problems are sufficiently fixed, and many players have had successful labrum repair surgery. And if his wrists are good, I see a huge bounce back season for him. If this is the case he's twice the player Jarnkrok is.

Big ifs though.

Not just big "ifs", but a large number of big "ifs".

The odds are long that Monny is ever a particulary productive player again.

That would be great, however my best guess the Flames will need to buy him out.

Cap will be an issue with the a couple of the new contracts

Lots of moving parts for this summer. And a lot of it will depend on tomorrow night.

I suspect that if he doesn’t return to something close to pre-injury Monahan, he goes on LTIR or might retire

Adds to centre diversity (don't have to play Jarnkrok with Toffoli, can keep together first line)

IMO we are in the 2nd round already with this guy playing.
Quite the hot take there.

If the Flames lose this series or even a round 2 series, I doubt cap will be an issue. The team will go into a retool (never say rebuild!).

For sure it's Monahan's nasty streak, physical presence, and over all speed that the Flames are missing in this series.

I've been thinking the whole time "Well sadly, taking Monahan out hasn't changed the complexion of the Flames this year." Was there a time? Yes. But as pointed out, it would be great to have Iginla or Kent Nilsson too.... it's all water under the bridge.

Could the Flames be better up the middle? Yes, but few teams actually ARE better up the middle. Backlund hasn't been bad, he's not a problem, and Lindholm's been fine. There's just not enough scoring talent on the team, and some of the talent hasn't shown up.

The Flames right now need goals more so then anything. So I would say they’re not missing Monahan in this department because he only scored 1 goal in his final 28 games this season. It’s a big reason Treliving felt he needed to make deadline moves in the first place, to add more depth scoring.

With that said though, the team probably does miss his strength in the faceoff circle. They’ve been owned at the dot and Monahan’s replacement in Calle Jarnkrok, has been a severe miscalculation management. He’s been miscast at center and it feels akin to sticking a scuare peg into a round hole. This guy played mostly wing this season in Seattle and scored at a 20 goal clip. Right now, he has 0 goals in 23 games. He doesn’t even look like a threat to score out there.

The 3rd line on this team has been a major disappointment this series. So I‘ll finish off by saying the team probably doesn’t miss Monahan, but I would certainly play him at center over Jarnkrok who I’d shift over to the wing in hopes that he could accomplish something other than nothing.

Maybe Jarnkrok will break out in Game 7 or Round 2.

Ironically I think the flames miss Richardson more than Monahan. I am not sure that he would have played every game and that the overall series results would be significantly different, but the only facet of the game that the flames have not had the advantage is the face off dot. A handful of key draws swinging the other way would certainly add up in a series like this.

Dallas would also play a bit different if they didn't know test basically every face off goes their way.

How though? He doesn’t look like a threat to score even a little bit right now. Ritchie right now might be the better option because he’s a bigger body who can throw his weight around on the forecheck and maybe create some havoc.Heck, I’m sure Ritchie could win 0% of his faceoffs as well.

Ultimately, the team just isn’t getting much out of Calle or his line as a whole, they don’t deserve much minutes. Some PK minutes maybe, the odd shift or two. But the guys who helped the team get to a game 7 deserve the 20+ minutes. The other bottom 6 lines can divvy up the final 20 minutes accordingly. If this team is going to go down with the ship, I wouldn’t want the useless players of this series taking turns manning the helm, just let the top performers steer the ship their way, they deserve it.

I love Sean Monahan from a few year ago.

If he was healthy he could make a difference. Damn we would win a lot more faceoffs.

Yet the reality is he is not healthy.

Not much else to say about that.

Putting an injured player into the line up wont help us.

Yet I do agree if he was healthy and ready to play it would help alot.
