And even more time trying to round back into form.

Schneider was also just recalled to Stockton. Gotta assume Gillies gets the recall to the NHL next.

I wonder if Smith tweaked his groin a bit after the 4th goal.

It looked like he moved very awkwardly on that play. I would not be surprised if you were right.

Yeah that recall was planned even before Smith got injured. Schneider was sent down to get game time because he hasn't played in about 2 weeks.

Smith's lateral movement has been absolutely brutal this year. He's clearly been battling through something, hopefully doesn't need surgery as that would be the end of him.

Maybe he developped a rubber allergy.
It looked like he did a pretty good job avoiding the rubber puck on the 4th goal but after that one rubber puck did strike him before the end of the second.
Could happen as before 1980 I never had an oil allergy and ever since, everytime I see or hear anything regarding the Oilers, I feel nauseated.

Wes Gilbertson @WesGilbertson
The feeling around Saddledome has been that #Flames backup David Rittich learned valuable lessons from his struggles while Mike Smith was injured last Feb/March. If Smith is, indeed, injured again, they believe Rittich is better-suited now to handle pressure of being go-to guy.
Wes Gilbertson @WesGilbertson
Worth noting Jon Gillies has struggled in Stockton this fall. My guess is Gillies is en route to Calgary now — if Smith’s injury was no biggie, he would have been on bench for third last night — but I think #Flames would be more comfortable riding Rittich in short-term.

I’m bracing for Smiths next start, if there was another alternative in Stockton I would say releasing him should be an option. There’s just not another alternative but this team needs to see how much load Rittich can take. Give him the next 3 starts and let Smith be the backup when he’s ready to come back. I still think Smths puck handling is a big advantage and he would be better in a back up role where most of his starts come on the road. He’s a complete sieve at home and the fans get on him fast (for good reason).

Yeah. It’s called old age and he isn’t winning that battle. Smith will be out of the league next year, if not before.

Yeah perhaps. Or an injury caused in part by old age. Either way can't play in the nhl if you can't move post to post. His play reminds me of when José Theodore was done. He just ain't moving right at all.

This team an under 30 average to above average NHL goaltender.
Don't wait until the trade deadline and overpay.
Tre, get it done.

Francis: Smith injury "not serious" but call up possible
I’m no goalie expert but it looks like he can’t stretch or push off to go side to side. Every goal he let in against philly was cross crease ( except for the 4 th which looked really awkward).
The screen cap of the sequence was after the fourth goal and it shows him reading the cross crease and he’s already in a weird awkward stance getting ready. Other goalies would push off or stretch to get over.

Gillies might not be doing well on the farm, but really, any goalie should be able to match Smith's current stats. Hell, put in a shooter tutor.

A shooter tutor would have stopped that Weise goal.

Really I didn't think Gillies was any worse than Rittich last season after Smith went down or this preseason. It's beginning to look like Gillies isn't going to pan as an NHL starting goaltender but it wouldn't be the worst thing to see him play a few games for the Flames if Smith is out for a while.

Sometimes AHL play doesn't really reflect what's going to happen in the NHL either. Rask had pretty average numbers in the AHL and his NHL numbers were immediately better once he made a full time jump into the NHL. Rinne had a .908 in the AHL the year before his main callup, after which he was posting .917, .911 and .930 in the NHL.

My wife and I thought he was hurt on the first Philly shot of the game. Got twisted around and got up awkwardly.
