Rural or Urban living. There are pluses and minuses to each.
When you said that, I felt my heart open up to rural living.

Haha, I'm headed a couple hours north of Flin Flon in a couple days. Beautiful country up there, but you don't want to forget the mosquito repellent.

You wouldn't want to go there right now with the blue green algae problem they're having. What I see on the news looks pretty gross.

Spent a couple of weeks up north and while everyone I was with went crazy with the black flies and mosquitos they did not bother me. It may have been that my blood was 2/3rds whisky back then but I will never really know.

What’s special about The Pas? I’m genuinely curious; I’ve never been there.

There isn't anything special but she thinks there is. We have a Trappers Festival every February with a World Championship Dog Sled race but I haven't cared about it since my cousin stopped racing. The only thing I'd recommend about coming to The Pas is to pass through to camp at the lake if that's what you like doing.

When I was in Winnipeg, I heard people refer to The Pas as “Tea Piss”. You know it’s bad when it isn’t even a place Winnipegers want to go.

After hearing about the insects I’m wondering how the fur trade ever got going. Did the natives and early Europeans have some type of insect repellent or were men just a lot tougher back then?

"The Pass" is what I hear mostly from people who have never been here. Or "Le Paw" because they want to sound old school even though we're far from a French town.

Are you talking about Crowsnest Pass? It's a pretty decent place to visit actually. There's some good camping and some good hiking trails too.

Horse flies tried to kill me hiking today. You can take your mosquito spray and huck it in the garbage if you have to deal with horse flies. Horse flies don't give a f. They've either figured out how to dive bomb in and out before it takes effect, or they literally don't care about deet. You have to use bear spray on them. I have three knee caps on each leg now. The bites swell up hideously. Is that even normal?

No, I don't think so. You better give me all your stuff, just in case.

You can have my leftover meds. I'm not taking them anyway.

Yes it's normal, if you saw a closeup of their fangs ripping into your skin you might get PTSD and never leave the house again

If you want to rough it in places like northern Manitoba for about $30 and a roll of duct tape (around the wrists and ankles) these mesh suits work great. Forest fire fighters use these all the time.

The bites usually swell up pretty good, but not that big. You could be more allergic to them though.

I agree, horse flies are way worse, and up North there would be lots.

It's not normal, but it happened to me once as well, so I don't think it is necessarily something to worry about.

I lived for a long time in Northwestern Ontario the flies are pretty bad there too. Not as bad as when I used to work in Fort Nelson though. I literally ran out of the bush screaming like a lunatic before. No kidding, I had blood all over my shoulders from so many bites. I ended up buying one of those net suits like the one posted above. It helps with the bites, but the buzzing can still drive you nuts.

These all sound like great reminders of the fact we should never forget: Nature is always trying to kill you. Let’s kill it first.
