Meh. I'd rather see one of Mangiapane & co. in the lineup

I watched Shaw quite a bit in Florida. He's an honest player who won't skimp on the work ethic. He definitely won't hurt you defensively, quite responsible. He brings a bit of physicality to his game as well with his 6'4" and 210 pound body. He can play center, but mostly plays wing, and has always had a pretty strong forecheck as part of his game. Skill isn't his biggest attribute, but he'll pot a goal if he gets an opportunity.
He wouldn't be a terrible depth player to add, but he's definitely in the conversation of 13/14th forward. Not a starter. The Flames forward prospects lack size, so he's a nice option that way.

Not sure how this has anything to do with Mangiapane and co.
Wouldn't you rather see them earn a spot?
If Logan Shaw is a problem for them, they're clearly not ready for NHL duty.
I dunno about that. Logan Shaw isn't just some throwaway PTO, he's an actual decent depth player who could probably earn a deal. But it's time to see some new guys and the Flames already have way too many guys pushing for spots.

This raises the bar for the young guys. Play harder, skate faster, raise your game or someone else is gonna get the spot.
I like it.
Competition is GOOD. Edmonton has no competition. Ergo: Edmonton is No Good.

Considering that he's 25 and last year was the first season of his career where he didn't bounce back and forth from the AHL to the NHL, I'd say Shaw is a prototypical 'tweener who is a little farther along than our current prospects. When all is said and done, he is the bar our prospects have to clear in order to earn a spot. If they can't clear that bar, they don't belong in the NHL.
I don't know why we have to have this same conversation every single year.

Shaw is unskilled but works hard and is a good pro.
For players like Dube and Mangiapane, all you have to do is show more skill than Shaw but have the same work ethic and professional demeanor. This seems doable to me.

Yes it is time to see some new guys. The flames have way too many guys who aren’t taking that next step and demanding NHL time with their play. Earn it!

Also, before anyone asks, Shaw is not a fighter. But, he will stick up for his teammates when necessary.
Case in point, a couple years back that idiot Matt Hendricks gave Ekblad a concussion with a dangerous hit at the boards. Shaw was the one who answered the call and went after Hendricks. He's a good teammate.

Would rather Shaw than Peluso. Shaw can at least play grinder-line duties and drop the gloves when needed.
Yes but Peluso is a serious heavyweight. I'd rather have Peluso out there vs the Oilers or Ducks, but for most other games I'd rather see Shaw in the lineup.
It is a PTO. This doesn't mean he's on the team or even the farm team at the end of training camp.
They have the squad going to China, and they have the squad staying here. They need to have bodies here to fill out a roster. Nobody is losing playing time and nobody is losing a spot unless they don't earn it.

Yea but you can still make an argument for PTO's getting more icetime here with the squads being split, and perhaps the feeling that one might stand out more potentially earning them a better evaluation.

Or maybe that's reaching...
I am under the impression that a PTO is trying out for every team in the league. The more icetime, or roles they get to showcase, the better exposure they get. Likely no PTO's will make the Flames, but one or two might get a contract elsewhere.
