Wasn't he doing a remarkable job? Guy must have been one of the best GM's in the league.

Um... okay. Go out when you're on top, I guess? No one can say he wasn't a fantastic GM there. I guess he can step away and come back when he wants into literally any job that's open.

I'm pretty surprised though, I'd think he'd want to win a cup as an executive, he's always wanted to prove he could do it even when he was playing.

Really shocking. Echoing the sentiment that it hopefully is not health related.

Yzerman has been extremely successful as a Lightning GM, and Tampa looks poised to make deep runs in the next few years.

Wow. That was unexpected.

He totally transformed that team and by all accounts has been doing a remarkable job.

Hopefully this is just because he realized that Florida is as close as it gets to Hell on Earth and that his true calling is to be Assistant GM in Calgary....

Good luck getting out of Florida Steve....and Godspeed!

Hard to imagine this doesn't end any other way than Holland getting the boot at the end of this season and Yzerman taking over in Detroit.

Suspect it has something to do with Detroit though.

Yeah, I'd be surprised if Stevie doesn't end up in Detroit at some point. Very unexpected though.

Trading Florida for Detroit?

What did he do to deserve this?

So apparently Yzerman's contract is done at the end of this season and he sold his house to Dan Girardi over the summer. Optics to me are that Yzerman knew this was coming and instead of just leaving them in the lurch in June next year, he's letting the transition start with the season.

Hopefully this signals the rapid and consummate decline of the TB Lightning.

He acquired Dan Girardi just for that.

"Hey Dan, want to come to Florida? I've got a lead on a nice house!!!"
