Bob McKenzie's Calgary Flames season preview
https://www.tsn.ca/radio/toronto-105...ames-1.1170668
Nothing really earth shattering if you have been following what the Flames managment and coaching staff have been saying in interviews:
Summary:
He couldn't do the interviews with the GMs like last year because all the western Canadian teams did not participate in one tournament
Wouldn't be surprised if early on all of Tkachuk, Lindholm, and Neal get time at RW on Gaudreau and Monahan's line
Wouldn't read too much into who is going to China and who is staying.
Billy Peters will be doing a lot of mixing and matching. Will experiment with a lot of concepts.
With Monahan coming off wrist surgery, Lindholm might have the inside track on the 1st line RW spot because he can take faceoffs for Monahan.
If the Flames are down a goal, Neal would be the natural fit for #1RW to get a shooter.
Whichever of Neal or Lindholm is not on the top line will fall down to the 2nd line with Tkchauk and Backlund.
Should give the Flames top 6 a lot more "offensive pop and creativity" they didn't have last year
Lots of positions up for grabs in the bottom 6
Jankowski looks to be the favourite for 3rd line C. They like his development
but keep in mind Ryan who played for Peters and is good at faceoffs.
Will be a spirited battle, but have a lot more depth at 3C and 4C
Thinks it is going to be a fork in the road season for Benett
Would have pegged Bennett for real big things in the NHL.
Maybe this is the year he is going to bring the tenancity, goals, and creativity
3rd line LW spot is right there for him if he can nail it down but there is a lot of competition
Flames have a lot of high hopes for Czarnik (can play RW or C)
he will be looking for 3rd line minutes
Neal and Linholm likely push down Frolik to where he should be in the lineup.
Going to be battling Bennett, Czarnik, Ryan, and Jankowski for those 3rd line minutes.
Lots of compeition for the 3rd line. Everyone outside of Frolik can play center.
Leaves Hathaway and Lazar defending off challengers from youngsters.
Flames really want to see if Foo, Dube, or Mangiapane are ready to play in the NHL.
Peluso is limited.
Burke is gone from Calgary but the desire for Truculence is not.
Peluso is there as a 13/14 forward tough guy option if they need it.
Peters is going into camp with a wide open mind.
Especially in the bottom half of the lineup.
Top 4 of blueline is pretty set.
Giordano-Brodie
Hanifin-Hamonic
They are going to miss Hamilton.
Hanifin is good for some of the offense Hamilton provided but he is not an offensive/scoring d-man the way Hamilton was
3rd pair you could pencil Kulak-Stone, but only pencil
Peters wants to see if the younger guys in the system are ready
primary guy is Andersson but Kylington and Valimaki will get long looks as well
Prout is kind of in the Peluso role for the defencemen - veteran size toughness option for the 6/7 spot
with the hole left by Hamilton Treliving might be looking for an upgrade on the 3rd pair of Kulak-Stone should it become available for the right price
Flames are confident that Smith will get the job done but he has to go out there and do it.
Gillies and Rittich will battle for the backup spot.
At the risk of overstating it, Peters doesn't owe anyone in the organizations anything and he is wide open to seeing what Rittich and Gillies do.
The feeling in Calgary is that this is the season they better take a big step forward.

too bad there's no season preview interview with Treliving this year, I always enjoyed those. McKenzie is the best in the business by a long shot.

He's bang on with Bennett. I think this is the season we see who he really is. Is he a 3rd line depth guy or can he really be a difference maker?

Pretty much sums up everyones thoughts...
I still think that Bennett will need to get some time in the top 6 if thats what the organization wants him to become.
you can't develop him as a third line winger and then expect him to just become a 2nd line or top line player, he needs the TOI and linemates to truly have a fair opportunity to take the next step. It does seem like hes got better linemates wherever he's playing this year.
Also, treliving interview on the Fan this morning talked about bennett for a good 5-10 minutes and I really think Tre wants him more involved than just bottom 6. Sounds like if bennett is playing well, he will be given every opportunity to excel, and will be moved up and down the lineup as needed.

"Flames have a lot of high hopes for Czarnik (can play RW or C)

Do you have a link to this? I can't find anywhere that Czarnik played at any position other than RW.
Lots of compeition for the 3rd line. Everyone outside of Frolik can play center.
Frolik can and has played at all 3 forward positions during his NHL career.
I feel that Morgan Klimchuk has a decent chance of grabbing the 4th line LW spot.

Klimchuk males so much more sense for the last regular forward spot than freaking Peluso.

If Peluso makes the team at all, it will be to munch popcorn and punch faces, and when the Ducks are in town the concessions will conveniently run out of popcorn.

Peluso is not going to be a top 12 player. He will be a 14th forward, to be inserted when required.
As for the 4th line LW spot, it is oe of the more interesting races in camp:
Rychel, Mangiapane, Dube, Klimchuk

Yep.
This pressure is on guys like Treliving and Peters obviously.
But on the players side, it is guys like Gaudreau, Monahan, Backlund, Giordano and Brodie.
There are very few players on this team playing for their next contract right now, which is not always a good thing. Will be very interesting to see who emerges as leaders to take this team to a more competitive level.

Its going to be interesting to see how the d group shakes out as there are many factors to consider..
- Gio, Brodie, Hamonic, Hanifin and Stone will be in the top 7 no matter what, barring an unlikely trade
- Andersson was given a lower number and all indications are that he will make the team out of camp
- Kulak was waived and the hope was to get a 2-way deal for him. Instead he got awarded a 1-way
- Prout also has a 1-way and is physical, adept at fighting and is highly regarded by the organization
- Prout, Stone and Andersson are all righthanded but are some of the frontrunners to play in the 5-7 spots
Gio-Brodie
Hanifin-Hamonic
Stone-Andersson
The above seems the most logical but will the team run the 3rd pairing with two RH shots on it?

The bolder part pretty much sums it up.
Needs to be a consistently good player and he will get all the ice time he needs.
The Flames would love him to earn a top 6 forward role. It will be up to Sam.
Would definitely make them a better team.

No he doesn't. Why would you want a guy like Klimchuk to be sitting in the press box most games when he could be actually playing in Stockton?

But no one is suggesting that Peluso will get a regular forward spot. If he makes the team, he'll be the 14th forward.

I think the pressure is primarily on Peters and the players. Obviously if the season doesn't go well BT will be on the hot seat, but in the NHL now, most of the work gets done in the summer. He's delivered and improved roster - now the roster has to deliver. The pressure shifts from the GM in the off-season to the coach and roster in-season.

I don't agree with the bottom pair assessment. There is no way Tre is looking for another D-man. If anything, I could see us moving a guy out to make space for a young guy.

Agreed. Treliving has assembled the team and made some bold moves during the period of time he had the most work to do.
The exception might be goaltending. If the goalies hold the team back, I believe Treliving will be under "pressure" to do something about it during the season.

Beyond all of the roster moves (most of which I am thrilled about), this is the main reason for my excitement to start the season. Unfortunately, often one player’s success means another’s failure, but overall this should be great for the team.
