These signings are consistent with Treliving’s yearly stock up on free agents, veterans on try out contracts, etc to increase competition in camp and not ‘gift’ NHL roster spots to the Foo’s, Mangiapane’s, Andersson’s, etc that most people have penciled in. Hopefully the Flames are due to find a diamond in the rough and we just acquired a complimentary piece of the puzzle.

I am hoping Hogstrom signing would mean we are trading one of our high rated D-mens for some offensive power.

A couple of years ago Hogstrom was released from KHL's Spartak Moscow with official comments from GM Zhamnov (yes that 90s NHLer Zhamnov) that he "is a nice guy, but no better than other defensemen that we have. Marcus probably knows himself, that he is not showing the level of play we have been expecting from him"

Before translation does “no better than other defensemen that we have” sound as harsh in Russian as it does in English?

It sounds as Zhamnov is explaining his decision to the fans, rather than throwing Hagstrom under the bus. Like "You know, guys, other defenders that we have, can provide the same things, as Hagstrom, so we decided to let him go". Should be noted, that KHL has a limit for the foreign players on the roster. So Zhamnov's point was about Hagstrom not being good enough to justify spending one of I think five foreigners spots on him.

And looking at the roster that year, I'm not sure he was accurate anyway. Hogstrom only played 30 games out of (I think) a 60 game season, and pro-rated he was better than all but a few defencemen on the team (some of whom were old NHLers).

Seems like awfully slim evidence to dispute a GM's assessment of a defenseman. Especially one who only got 8 points in 30 games, himself.

8 points in 30 games is as good or better than all but two defencemen on the team, and those guys were the veteran imports from the NHL.

Anyway, I didn't dispute it - I questioned it.

In Russian it sounds more of a justification. He does say that the D on the team are as just as good as him, though the way he says it is more like -“He is likely to leave the club, however the other defensman we have in place can fill in the gap left by his departure.”
