Yup, similar to the teams that wear the Stadium Series jersey after the Stadium game is done... limited use and special circumstance. Thirds are around 10 games max I think. Has to be a significant reason to have a retro.
Flames 40th is around the corner so that may be part of the whole situation. Third this year, limited use retro for the 40th. White 80s for the third, red 80s for the retro?
If that's the case which I hope it is then I cant wait to get my hands on those filthy jerseys. Would be kind of cool to see a 40th patch on them as well.
Wasn't sure where to post this, but just a heads up for any jersey fanatics out there Icethetics is teasing a special NHL jersey reveal in about 2 hours time that is "sure to blow you away" and is "too cool of a surprise to ruin".
They also mention that the Kings, Islanders, Penguins, Lightning, and Maple Leafs all have third jerseys yet to be revealed so it could be related to one of those teams. Robin Lehner's new mask has the fisherman on it so there is some speculation that might be it. I don't buy it as a fairly convincing Isles jersey has already been leaked.
Should also note- the gentleman that runs the site is a big Lightning fan so it may be related to them as well.

Why is it an odd mashup - that design is on the inside collar and the team wearing it is still technically the Hurricanes.
I don't mind it as a 1 game only thing. Think it would have been a bit of a stretch for that team to wear it as a full time 3rd but for a 1 time thing it's kinda neat.

As someone who grew up in CT and now lives in NC this is awesome to see! I will say, just because I am picky with jerseys, I always like the Whalers set from 93 through 97 more than this one, but whatever I am not complaining.
Well...Carolina wins for the 3rd Jersey game this year. One of the best logos ever in sports coming back. Now what would happen if Arizona decided to do a retro Jets logo for 2 games?

The Whalers jerseys are nice! It 's a shame that the Whalers. Yellow Canucks, and Nordiques jersey's sit on the sidelines while you have teams like tampa, arizona, carolina, vancouver go with generic looking jerseys.
It's blasphemous Calgary doesn't take advantage of their retro's more given it's a classic colour combination that no one else in the league wears. There are plenty of red, black and white colour schemes.
