I disagree, I think Tavares is a game breaker type forward. I don't think he is coming here anyhow.

Great, I disagree with your disagreement. Tavares has been a superstar in waiting for years, but never became a player that could dominate and take over a game like Crosby, Ovechkin, or McDavid. A game breaker of that level would lift a team like the Islanders into a playoff slot with consistency. He hasn’t done that. No way is he a $12M player. Not even close. $8-9M you have me onboard, but $12M? That’s an Oiler level mistake.

Man, I really, really, really want the Flames to land Tavares because IMO it gives the Flames two legit #1 lines and takes us to contender status if we get solid goaltending, but I want it even more now so I'd be able read your posts after it happened.

Not to derail this further but I’m Chinese and grew up in Canada, and the amount of jokes centered around dog and Chinese food that I’ve heard in my lifetime is actually pretty annoying. That being said it is a fact that dog is a cuisine in many parts of China (not all parts however). I understand the humor behind it, and that in this case it’s meant to be a jab at Oiler stink, but also understand that Chinese cuisine is extremely diverse and that Chinese people eating dog has been used on me numerous times humorously (even though I’m from HK and dog is not part of the cuisine there) to make me appear outcast and different than my friends, and is often accompanied by other more harmful jokes about my facial features or our language.

Like the title says, it's NOT who you WANT but who do you THINK they will acquire? If it was who we want the poll would be about 99% Tavares.
This is a legit top 6 forward who has already produced top 6 offense in the NHL fairly consistently. Not some under that radar guy who might turn into a top 6 NHL forward.
That's why I didn't list guys like Riley Nash, Derek Ryan, Kasperi Kapanen or Burakovsky.
I also tried to pick guys that have been rumored to be on the move, or are on teams who just changed GM's so likely have a better chance of being moved because of the regime change.
Let's see how many people can guess correctly.
Poll options:
1. John Tavares (UFA)
2. James Neal (UFA)
3. James Van reimsdyk (UFA)
4. David Perron (UFA)
5. Thomas Vanek (UFA)
6. Paul Stastny (UFA)

Probably Perron, I have a hard time seeing the flames attracting Tavares or JVR.
via trade i see maybe O'Reilly to a blockbuster or Stone in in a cheaper trade.

I honestly believe Tree would go harder after JVR than he would for Tavares. Don't get me wrong, I know Tavares is a much better player than JVR, it's just that JVR fills an existing hole in our lineup for significantly less money, whereas Tavares would just gum up our C depth.

He's a game breaker all right. NYI just didn't have the right pieces and no consistent goaltending for a long time.
It'll be interesting if Bazar can repeat his rookie season with Tavares gone.

Trust me, nothing would change. I’m not a fair weather fan that all of a sudden changes their opinion of a player because they change teams. A player is what a player is, regardless of his team.Tavares could be a Flame tomorrow, and I would still hold the same view of him. The funny thing is that you would quickly realize he isn’t as good as you thought, and the grass wasn’t greener, it was AstroTurf all along.

That's weird. Your phone somehow auto corrected "drastically improve" to "gum up".

I wasn't insinuating that you'd change your opinion, just that you might have a melt down. Especially if the AAV is $12 million.

I wouldn’t melt down, I’d just point and laugh at the cultists and wait a season for that contact to turn radioactive. Any player at that cap hit is an end to this franchise. We don’t have the revenue sources to support it, and it would cripple the team in the next two or three years.

If it fits within the cap then what does it matter? It just f’s up our cap situation... I don’t see what it has to do with revenue sources, or am I missing something?

Bt is not adding a prospect to Brodie for Niedereitter, so he wouldn’t be a legend if he added one

Big, fast RW that is 3 years younger who can put up 25 goals on 2nd line and is always a + player. I think Flames would have to add.

History says they don't.
Top 4 Dmen hold a lot of value, especially ones in their prime and on good contracts. Nino would be a solid add, but he's been a 0.5ppg winger on average for 4 seasons now. 0.5ppg wingers don't command 23 minute per game Dmen plus an add. If anyone adds in a Brodie/Nino deal it's Minny IMO.

I would usually agree, and hopefully Brodie's value still stands with the GM's of the league. Had this been last year or the year before Id say Minny adds for sure. But Brodie has had a lot of negative feedback all year and Id agree with most of it.
