Vancouver developers who have built many of the major developments over the last 15 years have been leaving Calgary
That's not a positive development for Calgary. No pun intended.

Meh, more like "Vancouver developers who have built several cookie-cutter condo towers over the last 15 years are leaving Calgary". Their bread and butter is high-rise condos, and frankly I think our market is entirely oversaturated with them and they're not particularly desirable anyway.

I think we have a massive dearth of denser low-rise forms of housing. There's too little being built between two-storey side-by-side duplexes and high-rise condo towers. The Vancouver developers who are the subject of that article specialize in mediocre condo towers: they don't do anything else well. They came here to make a buck because the Calgary market was preposterously hot: they're not really interested in "city-building" per se.

LL Bean opening a store in Calgary.

https://www.ctvnews.ca/business/l-l-...rder-1.5407772

Slightly surprised they'd do this. LL Bean is basically an Eddie Bauer to me, a grand old brand of the 90's.... But then again, browsing through their website they seem to have moved beyond clothing into outdoor gear and housewares too. Chinook would be my guess for their location.

I've never heard of that brand before
But it does definitely make me think 90's... crossing between "LL Cool J" and the phrase "cool beans"

It's more like Peterman. You did hear about Jay Peterman, right?

Whatever Planet Organic rebranded as (as per internet rumours; can't remember the name) is gone already. Or at least the one in Southwood is.

Yup, last year I think. They were pretty much exactly like Planet Organic including always having a half empty store- they sent out an Email a few months in saying "We tried, but it just didn't work" Having a Dollarama in that mall is great, but it seems empty all the time too

It's too bad they couldn't get more going there. There's a lot of population density in that area that has to drive a good distance for a decent grocery store or other quick goods.

I can go to No Frills for things like milk, eggs, pantry stuff etc, but not beef, chicken, produce, fresh goods.

We used to have the safeway at macleod and southland, but that's gone. The southcentre safeway isn't disastrously far, but at 8-10 mins each way, you're looking at a 30 minute outing which kind of sucks if you want to just pop out and grab something quick for a meal or whatever.

We went once not long after they opened. The thing that struck me is that they claim to have fresh never frozen patties, which means they go to great lengths to make fresh beef look and taste like frozen Costco patties.

I bought the best hanging toiletries bag from there a few years ago.

In fact, I like it so much, I eventually bought one for everyone in my family.
Nothing like matchy matchy gifts under the Christmas tree.

Spoiler!

I am not particularly gleeful about places shutting down, but that was a chain that wasn’t destined to survive here with the offerings that Calgary has. Which reminds me, it was close by to a really good bagel shop. I hope its still around. I haven’t had good bagels in so long.

That sort of building is generally wood construction and they're awful, you hear everything. You could live below a suite of ninjas and ballet dancers and it'll sound like the Calgary Zoo has relocated the elephant exhibit there.

I live real close- and do the Superstore/ Co-Op/ Save on triangle for most shopping, Costco maybe once a week. No Frills is perfect to grab a couple things quick- Haven't set foot in a Safeway/ Sobeys in years, too expensive!

For one their burgers gave me horrible gas
But just greasy bad fast food. And I can't believe that they claimed to use unfrozen patties.
Just horrible.
