What happened? They just can't compete with the Walmart across the street?
They are closing that one and one in Windermere (Edmonton) which is also a very new area. Both seem to be headscratchers.

I think you answered this yourself H&L.... that demographic is price sensitive and will got to the local WalMart or Superstore before the perceived high prices of a London Drugs. Those suburbs are probably younger too, and likely use Amazon / online heavily.

Couple that with rent rates signed in better times - no point in LD burning cash.

It's a shame, every time I'm at London Drugs, I always say to myself, "there's a lot here - I should support this Canadian business more".

I've been surprised for a long time now that LD is still in business. It just seems like a melange of different departments that don't really belong together and they don't really specialize in any area. Do they really need to sell outdoor patio furniture and BBQs? All sorts of electronics? The only time I ever visit LD is if I hear about a ridiculous sale or clearance on something.

I like going to LD since it's like a chaos store. The assortment doesn't make sense and I can discover hard-to-find retro gaming accessories, vinyl records, discount furniture, and clearance kitchen gadgets all in one place. It's always interesting what you can find there.

I actually heard about this closure from a yoplait gobbling hipster lamenting that he couldn't get his black & white FILM developed at that London Drugs anymore.

I got some great deals from the closure of the 17th Ave store (they decided not to compete with the Best Buy and Canadian Tire and Urban Fare across the street). Arcade 1 Up machine, steaming Microwave, and mid-century modern dining table and 4 chairs for only $100.

I've also been surprised LD has lasted this long TBH. For such a big store size, they don't seem to generate a lot of foot traffic into their stores to justify the size. Even the new store in Sage Hill, I barely notice any cars in their parking lot. As traditional B&M become the casualty of ecommerce, I really don't see how LD can survive.

I like going to the London Drugs in Brentwood for computer repair. They are an authorized Apple repair centre, and have authentic old-school computers nerds, so are much more helpful than the useless hipsters at the Apple Store.

When I worked there 13 years ago, they do quite well off of the pharmacy alone. A lot of their flagship locations they also own the land around the store as well.

London Drugs is a great store and the Mount Royal one closing still stings.

The loss of the Esso on Crowchild and 5th saddens me.

One more awesome thing about London Drugs - as long as an item is in stock at a Calgary store - delivery is super fast.

Bought some Kauai coffee from them (if you've been to Hawaii you know it, it's the stuff in blue bags) online at 9pm. The stuff in stock was here next day by 2pm. The rest came from Edmonton and was here 3 days later via Canada Post.

I still haven't figured out what their name is supposed to be. I thought it was GYM MOVEMENT without the vowels, but then where's the N gone?

Perhaps they can rebrand again into a name that's not so stupid in trying to pronounce.
