I think he was a huge get. Outside of Brodie I can't recall the last time the Flames developed a defenseman, let alone 3 of the caliber we have now.

Three?
Huska coached Andersson and Kylington in Stockton, but neither Hanifin nor Valimaki.

Limited coaching I guess, but he is an assistant coach on the big club so he's done some work with them as well.

It is really nice to see him do well after the early talk of his fitness issues.
Speaks positively for both the player and the organization.

The 2015 draft was really deep, especially for defensemen it seems. In a shallower year, I wouldn't be surprised if Andersson would have been 1st round material.
Playing more with Gio is only going to help him more. I don't expect Andersson to be a rover like Giordano as speed isn't his strong point, but his willingness to take punishment and his slap shot remind me a lot of Giordano.

One of the best thing about the flames youth movement on D is that they get to learn under Gio. For the rookies to see how relentless Gio is all over the ice is going to pay off big time. I can’t think of a better Dman in the league that I would want them to learn from

But when you talk about keeping all of the young defensemen, you have to look at the LHD/RHD mix. Kylington, Valimaki, Hanifin and Giordano all shoot left. There are only three slots available.
Are you going to ask one of the young guys to switch sides?
|
I'm going to ask Gio to switch to the right.
When Gio's hands and skating go, his heart and competitiveness will still make him a good defender. He can probably play the 3rd pairing right side and just focus on the defensive side and be a defensive anchor for Kylington.

agreed and especially against Pitt when McCann gave Gio a couple of crosschecks in a scrum and Andersson dropped the gloves.

Brett Kulak averages 17:04 on a team that's 34-23-7 while leading them in CF%

Plus Janko, Hathaway and Mangiapane up front, and to a lesser extent, Rittich in net. Nice to finally have some prospects make the jump from the AHL to the NHL.

Kinda crazy that the flames drafted Fox too, Flames seem to have figured out how to draft Dmen and that’s pretty damn important.

Raz being a right-handed shot also can't be understated. Look at the past couple of drafts and look for RH defensemen, those guys are like unicorns.

People certainly can't say the Flames don't give young players a chance anymore. Both Treliving and Peters both seem to be on-board in that respect.

Andersson’s been an absolute revelation. I knew he’d eventually be real good, but I didn’t think he’d be this good this quickly. It took him some time to figure out the NHL game, but now that he has, his game has grown exponentially.
Last 34 games: 2 goals, 10 assists, 12 points (29 point pace)
He’s essentially made Brodie and/or Stone expendable. If Andersson can continue this fine play now and through the playoffs, I would have no issue trading TJ Brodie for an asset in the summer.
The UFA market for defensemen looks really thin, so TJ Brodie might be able to garner a decent package especially with his impressive looking counting stats this season.

The best thing about Rasmus is he isn't just a really good player on a remarkable curve, but he is a really good player on a remarkable curve and has some real snarl and grease to his game. Had no idea that it was part of his game as much as it is. And you can see him getting more and more confident as he realizes everything he has done to get to the NHL.......... is getting better at the NHL.
Really impressive stuff.

What's crazy about Andersson is at the draft, he had the stats of a 7-15th OA pick, his development has consistently that of a 7-15th OA pick and yet at the draft, nobody thought he was close to that high of a pick.
I remember on draft day I was hoping OK would drop to the flames, then they draft RA who I'd never heard of, but his numbers were so good I wasn't about to complain, then they get OK anyways. Two mid first caliber picks at the end of the 2nd round, so crazy.

I wouldn't be surprised if most still think that.
Their unwavering belief in their prospects is what I think keep most of the waking up in the morning.
