Default New York Times shows some love to the 2018-19 Calgary Flames

Hot on the heels from last week’s Toronto Sun, we’re hot in the Big Apple!

SAN JOSE, Calif. — It may be lonely at the top, but that phrase seldom applies to the N.H.L. All-Star Game.

Among the four coaches — whose teams were in first place at the cutoff point this month — Paul Maurice had two of his Jets in tow, Jon Cooper guided three players from his Lightning and Todd Reirden had three of his Capitals named to the team, though Alex Ovechkin opted not to participate.

The remaining coach, Calgary’s Bill Peters, was accompanied by only left wing Johnny Gaudreau. Each team is required to be represented in the game, meaning the Pacific Division-leading Flames had as many All-Stars as each of the four last-place teams.

Excellent. This team should be sick and tired of being a "dark horse." It's been too long since Calgary had a veritable contender.

Never understood why fans worry about this kind of stuff. We know how good they are, who cares what the rest of the world thinks.

Duhatschek compared Rittich, a Czech, to his most venerated countryman, Dominik Hasek, in terms of his attitude, competitiveness and mental makeup.
I supremely agree. I thought I was the only one who noticed Rittich acting like Hasek at times.

It's inevitable. Don't worry. At least we get more fans! And maybe some of them will eventually be real fans in the next few years.

I'm not afraid to admit this but I bandwagoned for the 2015 #NEVERQUIT Flames. Evolved into a loyal supporter since.

There is a "Fan Trade Deadline" thing on Reddit going on. Sign up, submit a 2 team NTC, and become adopted by a different team's fanbase at random.

Seeing some from the East. Bruins, Senators. Couple of AZ fans.

I jumped on the 2004 bandwagon. I'm guessing tons of fans start as bandwagoners. You have to start somewhere, and years when a team is good and interesting are a lot more likely to get your attention than years when they're bad and uninteresting.

I just organically became a fan because my household was. I probably actively started cheering for them in 1995. It's no wonder Iggy is my favorite all time; I practically feel like we grew up together.

Jumping on the bandwagon can create hardcore fans for years to come. I was not much of a NHL fan in 2004 but got hooked during the playoffs and 15 years later I am as hardcore as ever including being a season ticket holder.

Not immediately, we still mostly under the radar. If we make it past the first round, it's going to be a full blast bandwagoner rush the rest of the way

I was a 1980 bandwagoner.

Exactly, people have to start somewhere when becoming a fan of the sport

A lot of us were born into being Flames fans, or chose simply based on geography. If you don't live in a city with a team, or even outside of North America, jumping on a "bandwagon" is the only option for a new fan

If I'm someone getting into the sport and I'm looking for a team, I'd want to know who the best player is. You find out it's this kid McDavid. You look into hopping on his team's bandwagon, but you see McDavid with a permanent frown and crushed soul, and he's the only horse pulling an absolute disaster of a wagon with 3 wheels, no upgrades since the '80s, and a bunch of lunatics at the reigns pretending they know what they're doing because they were the ones pulling the wagon in its glory days

You then look south and see a beautiful, bright red wagon with so many young thoroughbred horses pulling it, it looks like Santa's sleigh. That's the wagon I'm jumping on

Any new fans should be welcomed here on CP, since anyone jumping on the bandwagon has clearly made the right choice. If they're not in it for the long haul they'll disappear anyways

The first Hockey game I ever genuinely watched was Game 1 against Detroit in 04 (aged 11 at the time), My dad turned on the TV game 7 against Vancouver when Overtime started, can't recall a single moment with regards to the Flames before that. The way the city changed in a few short weeks after winning that series still makes me smile.

All of this positive press is making me somewhat nervous. Hopefully the guys can just stay focused on the task at hand and don't get too wrapped up in all the attention. When teams start believing their own hype, that's when laziness can set in.

That being said, I'm sure Peters will have the team ready to go for the stretch drive. Still lots of hockey left before the playoffs.
