Necessary move for Toronto.
Now the arms race amongst the top teams begins.

Good deal for the Kings as they need to get younger and they did that with this trade. They will need to make good use of their 1st round picks this year. Puts the pressure on Babcock to win in the playoffs which is something he hasn't done for a while.

I'm not going to miss Muzzin in the pacific. Very good defenseman in his prime, even if L.A.'s had their decline overall.

Seems alright for both sides. Like it for the Leafs since he has another year left. They still need a righty though

Maybe I see this the wrong way, but IMO this is weak asset management by the leafs because they're going to be so hard pressed against the cap next year.
It's not a bad price for Muzzin, but the implications are that the Leafs will be hard pressed to re-sign Jake Gardiner this summer with the additional cap hit of a LH defenseman.
So in 2018-2019 the trade is: 1st+two 2nds for Muzzin
In 2019-2020 the trade is: 1st+two 2nds+Gardiner for Muzzin
Put differently, is it worth a 1st+two seconds to have Muzzin as a rental for this years playoffs and then upgrade Gardiner for Muzzin next season?

I don't like this for us because it means the Kings have seen the writing on the wall and they will probably be good and infused with young talent before the Oilers are...

The days of the Leafs making horrible moves are over since Brian Burke left.

Only saves the laffs $50K next year if you consider Muzzin the replacement for Gardiner.

It seems like the Leafs fans on HF are upset to lose Carl Grundstrom

I'd say a slight over-payment for Muzzin, but a decent deal overall

This is what makes the trade terrible from an asset management perspective. You lose a low cap hit defensemen, get a year older, lose gardiner, lose a first round pick, and lose a second round pick. And you save $0.05m of cap space. It's not smart. How much better is Muzzin than Gardiner?
Meanwhile, for this upcoming playoff run the leafs are going to have Muzzin-Reilly as their first pairing, which isn't ideal because they're both LH shots. And then Gardiner-Hainsey as the second pairing, which is lol because that line is a defensive liability. So have the leafs even really improved their defense that much?
They should have just bit the bullet and traded for Hamilton.

Its going to be fascinating to see how the Leafs get all those RFA's signed with the cap room they will have.
Matthews, Marner, Kapanen, Sparks, Johnsson, Ozhiganov will have about 22M to split among them as it stands.

A little surprised, given Babcock's preferences, that they didn't get a RHS.

Thank God the Flames don't roll with a top pairing with two left hand shooters.

Interesting to see how quick he gets up to speed. Historically incoming players have a couple good games, then take time to adjust. Just my opinion, but I think it rare for a new guy to join a team and be “lights out”.

Sadly, I think it's a good deal for Toronto.
For LA, too.
Price is high but blueliners come at a premium, and they didn't give up any blue-chip prospects. The 1st will in the 20s most likely, and it's not a rental.
Yeah, cap space will be tight next year, but the assumption was that Gardiner would be gone anyway.

I'm pretty sure we all know that the Kings have seen the writing on the wall... if they don't, they should all be fired post haste.
That Doughty contract is going to look more and more gruesome. He's brutal. Sportsnet had a highlights package of the season thus far into late December, and out of the top 30 goals a very sizeable amount of them were Doughty getting owned. He looked atrocious. I was amazed he was put on the Home-Star team.
