Default The story of John Scott's 2016 All Star Game experience by WNYC's Radiolab

Amid the ASG festivities and frivolities, I thought I would share this excellent podcast featuring the most memorable NHL All Star event in modern memory: John Scott and the 2016 All Star weekend in Nashville Tennessee. It is titled, "The Punchline":

https://www.wnycstudios.org/story/radiolab-punchline

Quote:
"John Scott was the professional hockey player that every fan loved to hate. A tough guy. A brawler. A goon. But when an impish pundit named Puck Daddy called on fans to vote for Scott to play alongside the world’s greatest players in the NHL All-Star Game, Scott found himself facing off against fans, commentators, and the powers that be. Was this the realization of Scott’s childhood dreams? Or a nightmarish prank gone too far? Today on Radiolab, a goof on a goon turns into a parable of the agony and the ecstasy of the internet, and democracy in the age of Boaty McBoatface."
For those who don't already listen, Radiolab is a widely acclaimed award winning weekly podcast that features excellent and interesting stories about science, history and culture. It should be on everyone's subscription list. I believe this is the first hockey story they have ever produced.

Enjoy.

Speaking of John Scott, there is an interesting article at The Athletic about how he almost died over the holidays. I guess he fell through the ice on the pond behind his home.

A story we've all heard before, but a story that you can never hear too many times. I've never listened to a Radiolab pod before, but they're very cool. Took me a few minutes to get used to it, but it was definitely worth it.

That was excellent. Starts off slow but the end was powerful.
