@ 2016 draft: CGY almost traded Backlund, Wideman, 6th OA to EDM for 4th OA , 2nd rd
thankfully the BJs picking PLD upset this trade if true

From Chiarelli file, one trade that didn't happen: 2016 Draft. #Flames wanted to flip picks to ensure either Tkachuk or Keller. Believe offer from CGY was Backlund and Wideman to flip picks plus a 2nd rd'r from EDM. I think #Oilers we’re really interested in Sergachev.

This doesn't make sense. If CGY wanted Tkachuk or Keller and knew EDM wanted Sergachev, then they'd know that Matthews/Laine/Puljujarvi/Sergachev in some order would be gone before their pick at 6, plus one of the two guys they wanted.
I can't see Backlund (even with only one year left on his deal at the time) being the difference between Tkachuk and Keller.
He still wouldn't even be worth the difference between the two.

Second, if the price to draft Tkachuk is Backlund, you give up Backlund. Especially if the deal was Backlund and Wideman for Tkachuk and a 2nd. I love Backs, but we're talking about Matthew Tkachuk here. Huge upgrade.

If Puljujarvi goes 3, I'd be fine with letting Tkachuk go to Edmonton and sticking with both Keller and Backlund -- but maybe that's just me. Of course I'm muuuuuuuuch happier that things transpired the way they did

There is no way they would give up Backlund just to move up 2 spots.
From 3 to 1, or from 4 to 2, sure. But not from 6 to 4.
Especially when they had 2 potential targets, and were all but guaranteed of getting one of them regardless.
