Also your geography point is dead on. I think the recent move to Toronto has really helped this team. Before a lot of players who were born in the Toronto area just didn't want to play for the Toronto Maple Leafs. But now that the Toronto Maple Leafs have moved to Toronto a lot more players want to play for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
You can't really dismiss the art of tanking. Others have been Pittsburgh (Cups), Chicago (Cups), Washington (Cup), TB (Cup). There is admittedly an elemnt of luck or planning to tanking at the right time to get a Mario, Crosby, Ovie, or Kane.

Calgary was also potentially interested in Jake Muzzin...

Calgary Flames’ Pieces To Target
Jake Muzzin — The defenseman comes at a reasonable price as far as cap hit ($4 million). One snag plays out as far as the contract. Muzzin still has one more full year left on his deal. Also, the trade commodity would cost in the form of assets (first round pick potentially and prospect). If the price comes down a bit, Calgary could jump but the urgency is not an emergency.

How would a Flames package compare to the Toronto offer?

2019 first round pick
Carl Grundstrom
The rights to Sean Durzi

I don’t believe the Flames were interested in acquiring Jake Muzzin. They have neither the assets nor the roster room for him. The piece you posted is broadly speculative. I think any actual trade targets the Flames might have are close to the bottom of that list.

Sure, but there were 28 other teams who could have taken a swing at Pronger too, and Burke was the one who landed him. A big part of building a good team is recognizing opportunities when they come up and jumping on them.
