Default Dealing with car prowlers / thieves

After reading the "cat thread" I thought I could get some advice for the ridding of our neighbourhood vermin: thieves!

We had 40 reported vehicle break-ins Saturday night (actually early Sunday morning) in our neighbourhood, and 2 stolen cars.

The stolen car on our street they only managed to drive maybe 20 meters, then they fled. The parking brake was on.

One neighbour caught them on his camera (motion activated thing) so the police took that picture. One neighbour chased two boys and caught them. But he let them go after shaking them about a bit. He said they were probably 16.

Not on our street, but in the 'hood; a guy caught a thief in his car. He kept her (yes her) in his car until the police arrived. So we now know that at least one group of them drives here from Mackenzie Towne.

So far they had only taken change and electronics foolishly left in cars. Stealing cars has brought it up a level.

So we have some plans for Friday and Saturday night on our street. Further input always welcome.

I think they'll skip your hood now since they've been close to being caught. Its a shame the guy who caught them let them go. A good ass whoopin is usually a cure for budding crackhead car theives.

It's been going on since spring. They just had some kind of crazy spree Sunday morning. It started with unlocked vehicles, so foolish people lost stuff.

Then they moved it up to breaking in to get to electronics.

If you think they'll be back set up a bait car, ipod on the dash, navigation hooked up, ect. Wait in a van or in a house with good sightlines. If you see them go for it wait until they are inside. Run out and grab them, if they resist begin the punching. It usually helps to have someone cut off their escape route so they cant just run away.

Good luck and be careful. You never know when it's some crazy drug abuser carrying a knife, and they can get very aggressive when confronted.

I had my car broken into last summer in my parkade, and I know it really sucks. I think they were still in the parkade somewhere when I came down at 1:30AM on a Wednesday night and found my window smashed.
The temptation to grab a bat and start searching around was definitely there, but I've got too much to lose risking getting knifed by a crack head steeling change from my car for his next fix; especially in Van where desperate junkies are everywhere.

Form a block watch/citizens patrol every weekend. Members randomly taking turns doing patrols during the evening.

RCMP find stolen trucks, explosives

Calgary Herald September 13, 2010

Crime - Police say they have found an alleged chop shop just outside Delacour, about 10 kilometres east of the city, that had three stolen trucks, stolen licence plates and explosives on site.

On Wednesday and Thursday, the RCMP searched the property and say they found three stolen Ford F350s, one more F350 in pieces, three cargo trailers, two camping trailers, a firearm, multiple stolen plates and a gel substance believed to be an explosive.

"The RCMP has people of interest, but as of this time there is no set charges or arrests," said RCMP Const. Robert Frizzell.

The investigation is ongoing.

Use your 5-Killstreak to get a Sentry Gun.

Alternatively...GPS bugs might be worth consideration as well.

Ah that was an excellent thread. I think Ken042 was judged the winner.

They have been shunned.

Buy a Transformer car. Nobody will try to steal money off of Bumblebee.

In seriousness, I've heard GPS works well for stolen cars.

Why choose this option when you can just go for some humane traps? Perhaps it can be some sort of trap where they can only be let out after successfully completing complex math problems or something.

Why must you go to the chemical solution when there are natural/non-chemical possibilities out there?

I thought meth grew on trees?

But animals are smart enough to not eat chemicals but aceholes who steal cars are too stupid and will.

I was thinking about what I would do in a situation like that. Broken limbs with a few swings of a baseball bat would probably serve the community well.

Then again, I was just watching Kick Ass, so I'm all pent up on superhero adrenaline.
