I am assuming you already have Telus fiber, since you are getting 50/5 (actually, it is really 50/10)
1) Run cat5 from your fiber box (the white one) to a spot on your first or second floor (if possible - see below)
2) Replace your Telus router (the black one) with almost any router from Memex. Sometimes the routers don't work properly, mine used to cut out after 30 minutes, Maybe Telus can suggest a model.
3) Connect your new router (or the crappy Telus router) in it's new location, giving you a better signal
4) If you can't get your router to work in place of the Telus router, and the wireless still sucks, disable the wireless on the Telus router and use your own router as a Wireless Access Point.
Even if you don't have your house cat5 wired, you can run a cable through a cold air return, or drill through the plate of your main floor wall to run the cable up from your basement (assuming it is unfinished in at least one spot) and put in an actual jack into the wall without much problem.
