For me. the last thing this roster needs from a risk assessment standpoint is a back up in case Smitty goes down. I was not comfortable with rittich or gillies during their long stint at rotating starters during the Smith injury.

Still deep on D even without Fox and Hamilton, FW's are legit stocked now. Just someone to fill in the eventual Smith injury/keep him under 60 starts.

Curious what they do with Stone, but I am don't think Brodie returning to form is necessarily a show stopper. Brodie/Stone was effective before leaving us with the below:

Gio/Hanifin
Anderson or Kulak/Hamonic
Brodie/Stone

This setup allows Hanifin to grow into what we want him to become and opens a top 4 spot with a stable veteran. This flexibility is why I am not as keen about moving Stone as some.

Mike Smith declining or getting injured again is really my only concern right now. Not sure how I feel about going into next year with Gillies / Rittich as the backups. They were not good after Smith got hurt.

Not saying I think all those things are a problem, but there are always things to worry about.
There are always things to worry about, but this isn’t one of them. Have you seen Gaudreau’s reactions when he scores a big goal? The guy’s about as passionate as they come.

Pretty sure this one never should have been on any lists from the get-go.

We need to figure out the backup/ 1b spot. Gillies/rittich were concerning last year. Would love to look at someone like Saros or Korpisalo

Can the coaching staff put together a top 10 power play?

If so, the team has a good shot at the division this season.

I have faith in Smith. Most of his injuries aren't from making a save or training, it's usually someone ramming into him or falling on him.

My only worry is our backup situation. Will any of them step up and look like a future starter?? Rittich looked amazing and then looked horrible. Which one is him?

Can Gillies stop channeling his inner Elliott and become more of a Bishop? Me hopes.

Seriously though what's up with all that construction? I'm not from Calgary but every time I go there I end up on 17th, and it feels like it's been under construction for a few years now.

A lot of new faces on the roster + a new coach. How long until the systems are down and chemistry found between players?

Smith staying healthy.

Can Brodie return to form with Gio.

+1 for the goalie situation. Not worried about Smith's performance, but his health and then what so we do after next season

We have heard all of these before but they are worth repeating.

This team executing Bill Peters systems . On paper once again things all point to great potential.
Can Neal, Smith and Tkachuk bring the rest of this team to hate losing enough that they play full games peddle to the metal and wear teams down and use the regular season as a 82 game practice for those final wins in the playoffs?

We have 3 talented goalies and some up and comers just behind them waiting for an opportunity to show what they have.

Train hard fellas I hope you are ready because I and allot of others have some lofty expectations. I’m much more excited for season 1 under peters his new assistants than I was for year 2 of glue gun.

They're adding 6 inches to the curb is what I can tell. Depends on which segment, I imagine they've done more substantial upgrades on the east end

Get Bennett away from Brouwer and let him develop chemistry with new linemates under the new coach.

If we see 45-50 PTs out of Bennett this year we're taking the pacific title assuming we stay healthy IMO

I agree. It’s tougher to see the fire in smaller, softer guys, because making the big hit or fight is just not in the toolbox. But whether it’s a solo effort play or a hard backcheck, you can certainly see the drive that Gaudreau plays with. The guy has won consistently until arriving with the Flames, at which time he has elevated the team to the playoffs twice after many years of missing the dance. Just because he isn’t the whole solution doesn’t mean he isn’t part of it

In order
  1. Defense Does Brodie return to form with Giordano? Does this defense work off paper?
  2. Goaltending Does Smith return to form? Are we going to have a capable goalie when he inevitably gets injured (he hasn't had a healthy season in a long long time)?
  3. Coaching Does this coaching staff actually turn out?
  4. Next Gen We are relying on a lot of guys in their late 20s through 30s. If we are going to stay relevant we need to get some youth onto the team that have an impact. With all of this depth do guys like Jankowski, Bennett, Anderrson, Mangiapane, etc have an opportunity to make an impact? How many of these guys are even Flames in September?

Remaining worries:

-What if Brodie has legitimately fallen off and Brodano now isn't what it was. (Or does getting the responsibility of the #2 guy light a fire and get him skating again)
-Smith getting rode into a late season injury and another year older means we need to be able to limit his regular season games while not getting lit up. Is Rittich able to handle 20 games and be serviceable?

Not really much beyond that. If Brodie isn't a liability up there and Smith is exactly what he was last season we should be set to make noise.

I don't see how this coach could ruin this much talent and depth with all the options at his disposal. Hopefully he helps more than hurts though.
