So I don't quite get this mass start speed skating that's coming up, what's the incentive to try and get sprint points to get into 4th place when no one cares about 4th place?

I don't get it either. What's so wrong with 'fastest time wins' that you need to create a point system?

Like bike racing it would be a 15 lap sleeper with no incentive or strategy to have a high pace.

But the point system is meaningless in the final anyways. It lets athletes grab early points and then dog it in the semis. The whole thing feels like BASEketball to me.

Three goals in 28 seconds! (2 for Canada, 1 for Czechia.)

Sweet saucer pass on the third, and the split second extra Roy held onto the puck before the backhand, opened up the goalie just enough.

Good second period. Solid play and smothering the Czechs. Bring it home guys.

It's meaningless in the Olympic final.
Points still have meaning for placement in the World Cup and final placement in World standing.

Alusalu often tries to gain as many points as possible to earn 4th places and hopefully hold on for a third. Pechstein won in Calgary with a similar strategy because she was able to hold on.
