Windows 7 Standard is already out of mainstream (free) support, and MS isn't going to spend the time to improve the OS or its features. It remains in extended support until 2020, so we'll still get security updates and you can still pay for support if needed. So there's no need to upgrade right away if you are disinclined.

The wireless connection on my Desktop Windows 8 PC at home will occasionally stop working. A reboot doesn't fix the issue, I have to uninstall and then reinstall the wireless card through the control panel to get it working again. It's not the worst thing in the world, but it's damn inconvenient when it happens. Something so basic should not be an issue this far after the release of the OS.

Having heard the preview supported Xbox One streaming I had to try it. Downloaded the preview, it was surprisingly easy to install and kept all my settings.
I can't find how to stream games though. My Xbox One appears to have streaming enabled in preferences. Anyone have luck doing this?

And also, I find the new menu system to be better, though I grew to like the tile screen. More importantly, not being forced into full screen with the mail app is a huge improvement.

If you are trying the beta--- and I think its great BTW.... to enable Xbox streaming you have to have your Xbox in the Preview Program.... to get that you have to be invited by someone already in the program. If anyone wants an invite, friend "DelgarX" and I'll send you an invite. The upgrade process on your Xbox will take a few days however as the "push" of the software to your XBox has to be approved by Microsoft.
Streaming works very well, I was playing NHL 15 from the XBox One tonight on my PC using an Xbox 360 controller. Very smooth.

Wait... like you can play remotely on your PC through your xbox?
as in.. I can play NHL while on the beaches of mexico??? I'm debating on the Xbone and PS4 but if I can do that... I'm sold on the Xbox!

One question about the free upgrade...
Do you get a license key with the upgrade from Win 7 to Win 10?
For instance, let's say I upgrade, then decide to toss in a new HDD into my system in a couple years - I don't have a Win 10 disc, so will I have a license to install win 10, or is it back to Win 7 for me?

lol, no. First off....Mexican infrastructure......
Pretty sure this is only doable on your local network, ie, inside your home.

As said above, I think its LAN only.
I can't imagine dropping a couple grand or more on a Mexican resort vacation and being excited to play Xbox there....

Someone actually got game streaming to work over the internet by:
1) Putting their Xbox One's IP in the DMZ
2) Manually entering their home IP address in the Xbox app on Windows 10
Not supported, and you need a great connection at home and on the road to do it, but it has been done.

Microsoft really seems to be nailing this Windows 10 upgrade process. They confirm that once a PC has been upgraded from 7/8 to 10, you can do a fresh install of 10 from .iso on that machine with no issue
https://techjourney.net/free-windows...-iso-download/
This just saved me the $120 or whatever the retail cost of Windows 10 will be because I figured that's what I would have to do to get a clean install

Just a heads up, if you upgrade a PC to Windows 10 and you have an Intel I217-V Ethernet controller (onboard), you may find that you don't get link, or that you connect at a maximum of 100Mbps.
The way to fix this, once you've updated your NIC driver to the latest one, is:
- go into the NIC properties
- make sure the NIC is set to auto negotiation for link speed
- from the advanced tab, change Gigabit Master Slave Mode from Auto to Force Slave Mode.
This fixed it for me. Hopefully Intel remedies this quickly, but in the interim, this works as intended.

Have they started the upgrade already? Or is this still a preview? I thought this wasn't happening until later into the month.

July 29th = Insider Members get their upgrades
After July 29th = People who reserved their copies will get it in 'waves' (who knows what that will actually look like)
I reserved a copy for my home desktop but then decided I'd rather make the jump now, so I registered this PC for the Insider Program.
Instead of installing the 10130 distro through Windows Update, however, I downloaded the public ISO for 10162 and upgraded from that instead. Currently on Windows 10 Pro Insider Build 10166 - Insider Fast Ring.

The final build should be available now, 10240. From what I understand this will be the release copy.

9 was skipped to avoid confusion with Windows 95/98. There were a total of 5 versions of 95/98, and many programs have logic built in that says "If Windows version = 9x, then behave differently."
Having Windows 9 had the potential to cause issues.
