When they announced that those corner spots would be available for advertising, they said that the league would have control over them during the playoffs.

https://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/...inventory.aspx

Quote:
Starting with the 2018-19 season, all 31 NHL teams will have the ability to sell each of the four new positions for preseason and regular-season games. For playoff games, the NHL will take control of the new positions, with the teams continuing to control the four around center ice.
The MGM Resorts and Amazon Web Services ads will probably be league-wide during the playoffs and the Flames just put them in early.

Never mind, it was just announcing playoffs events. False alarm.

I don't think the Flames would really have a problem with the city owning the arena. It all comes down on what non-hockey revenues the Flames would receive and the property taxes and other costs the city expects them to incur.

Jeff Davison was quoted on 770 this morning saying he is optimistic something will get done, the City is just doing extensive internal review for their end, and said unlike the previous round in (assuming in 2017), the City has a willing partner willing to put up significant investment. Very high level quote, but encouraging to say the least.

I'm sure they'd much prefer not to. They wouldn't have to pay property taxes, and wouldn't be left holding the bag at the end of the building's life cycle.

What I heard months ago from someone close was property tax was a bigger negotiating point. As in the Flames didn't want to pay it. This would align with that ask.

I think they are much closer than what is publicly released info. They're doing this the right way to ensure this doesn't go off the rails. What should have been done 3 years ago, so I am happy everyone has learned from the mistake.

Not surprising at all considering the incredibly leveraged position of Business Property Tax in the City at the moment, especially in any area that they would likely want to build an arena.

That in itself is a considerable concession made by the city. As an example i believe the Habs pay about 10 million dollars in property taxes a year.

It is a concession to be sure.

Which means the city may want to retain some of the benefits of ownership and not allow CSEC to keep all the earnings associated with the facility.

I think that is why the lid is on this one tight. If ding dong gets a snif of the negotiations he’ll for sure take something out of context and not big picture and sensationalize it.

I am interested to hear the final product for sure, but I think it will be done very well.

What benefit... What earnings... I can all but guarantee that that city will just reduce some of the expense they see from this building with the revenue they get and the city will not make money on this transaction. The city makes money on only two things.... Taxes and Parking... every other business it's in... it will lose money, even Enmax (but for the taxes that are embedded in those bills - which is a tax... it loses).

Four months into 2019 and the list of performers who have skipped or plan to snub Calgary in favour of Edmonton — and gasp, even Saskatoon — is growing.

Ariana Grande, Justin Timberlake, Ed Sheeran and Michael Bublé have all recently played Rogers Place, but have all kiboshed a trip to Cowtown.

You can soon add Shawn Mendes, Carrie Underwood, Ozzy Osbourne, The Who, Elton John and Celine Dion to the list.

"Nothing's really wrong with Calgary," says Ian Low, one of Canada's top concert promoters.

The Live Nation exec says the biggest hurdle for Calgary continues to be its hockey arena and its saddle-shaped roof. It's simply not strong enough to support the elaborate — and very heavy — speakers, lights, sets and other production elements included in more and more shows.
