I like Leason, I just don’t like him in the 1st round. Maybe not even in the 2nd. I think he could be an everyday NHLer. He really tailed off after the WJC in January but picked things up again later in the season. Watching his series against the Blades he truly was a man against boys out there.

I think Calgary can do better at 26.

Crazy production but underrated due to size. Alex Debrincat like is my guess.
That’s what Matthew Barnaby said on the radio yesterday. He sees Caufield as another Debrincat. Says he’s crazy talented.

It's the craziest idea ever, but I wouldn't be opposed to picking Spencer Knight with our first pick. ...if available.
Feeling like Flames have a good and young D-man foundation. A gamble on picking an elite goalie may be worth it this year.

Spencer Knight is the player the flames should draft if he’s there. Would be nice to not have to worry about goaltending for the next decade

Unfortunately he’s probably gonna go top 10 after an amazing performance at the U-18’s

The Flames would need to move up to #6 (Redwings) or #7 (Sabres) to snag Cole Caufield.

At what cost though?

To Calgary: 2019 1st round pick (DET) or 2019 1st round pick (BUF)

To Detroit or Buffalo: 2019 1st round pick (CGY) 2020 1st round pick (CGY) Oliver Kylington

When Flames were picking 6th OA (Monahan and Tkachuk) do you think #26 OA, lets say #26+ OA next season and Kylington would have been enough to pry it from their hands? C'mon quality over quantity.

The difference between a top ten and bottom ten pick in the first round is enormous.

Yes, that's true. Not much more Calgary can/will add, TJ Brodie is from Chatham, Ontario, which is practically Detroit. (maybe he would re-sign there)

Really? Your team is perpetually in the top 10 and always awful. There are risers and fallers in every draft. The Flames will get a chance to find a high end player at 26, there’s always one available, especially that early.

Some of Knights scouting reports are crazy. Calling him a top ten pick in any draft era except this one. Because goalies dont ever go until the 20's in the rarest of occasions. Who was the last goalie to go reasonably high in a draft? Samsonov? Hart?

2017 - Oettinger 26th (DAL)
2015 - Samsonov 22nd (WSH)
2012 - Vasilevskiy 19th (TB)
2012 - Subban 24th (BOS)
2010 - Campbell 11th (DAL)
2010 - Visentin 27th (PHX)

Goalies in the 1st round are scary. Those are the 1st round picks the last 10 years, meanwhile some 2nd rounders:
2009: Koskinen, Lehner
2010: Pickard
2011: Gibson
2013: Jarry
2014: Demko
2015: Blackwood
2016: Hart

Wow I thought Hart was a 1st rounder. Crazy.

Well in any case, Knight is of course an option. Would be neat to land a crazy elite goalie for once. Then again I still have high Hope's for Gillies and Parsons.

I'm curious how goaltending gets sorted out this year. Who we sign or trade or trade for or re sign for how long is going to tell us a lot about where the organization is at on our current stable of netminders.

I didn't name all the 2nd round goalies, just the ones that have done anything (sadly)...

The McDonald/Demo thing got me thinking about the Kidd/Brodeur scenario and I wondered was there another Flames goalie situation where a better goalie was chosen after the one we picked... of course there was.

Jon Gillies was taken 75th in 2012
Matt Murray was taken 83rd in 2012

Andrei Medvedev was taken 56th in 2001
Peter Budaj was taken 63rd in 2001
Craig Anderson was taken 73rd in 2001

Jason Muzzatti was taken 21st in 1988
Stephane Fiset was taken 24th in 1988

i'll cry if we use our first rounder on a goaltender, even though i recognize the organizational need.

Let's hope the Flames are on the winning end one of these times and our 54th pick in 2016 (Tyler Parsons) turns out better than the 48th pick in 2016 (Carter Hart)

Other instances where Calgary had high picks spent on goaltenders are Leland Irving being selected right smack in between Semyon Varlamov & Michal Neuvirth in 2006 and Brent Krahn at 9th - the next goalie taken after Rick DiPietro was chosen 1st overall in 2000, the next goalie would not be selected in this draft until the 44th pick, Ilya Bryzgalov.
