It would be nice, but this year i don't think the division or the conference will afford us such leeway. They need to roll ASAP and eliminate a slow start that has dogged the team perennially.

I don't like Ryan getting over double the amount of icetime that Jankowski or Bennett gets..

I'd like to see:

Gaudreau-Monahan-Lindholm
Tkachuk-Backlund-Czarnik
Bennett-Jankowski-Neal
Dube-Ryan-Frolik

Gio-Brodie
Hanifin-Andersson
Valimaki-Stone

This last quote seems like it's directed at Johnny. Gone are the days of Gaudreau carrying the puck into the offensive zone and stopping just inside the blue line, often using the button hook. Gaudreau has had some success using this move in the past, but we've also seen it backfire. Personally, I think Johnny looks best when he's got linemates who are driving the net and backing off defenders, allowing Johnny to cut to the middle of the ice and either put the puck on net or connect with a pass to the trailer.

Now we're seeing Gaudreau dump the puck in and Monahan or Lindholm give chase. Monahan doesn't have the best puck retrieval skills. Lindholm will have to pick up the slack here if this is going to be our main forecheck strategy.
I don’t know about that.

Gaudreau did the stop up and stick handle just inside he blueline thing a ton tonight,

What I did notice though is that they seemed to making much better decisions on when to do that, vs when to dump the puck in which is amazing.

This team was a little too predictable at times last year and I like that they seem to have more of a plan on zone entries this year.

Judging solely by his hair, he’s far inferior to GG. I don’t even think Peters does his hair or puts product in it. And there’s no style, it just looks like a bowl cut. GG now there’s a hairdo you can set your watch to.

Far too soon for this thread - although it's always good to speculate. His NHL record to date is nothing to brag about by any means. I was a Hartley fan personally, never took to GG and the Peters signing really had me scratching my head. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and re-evaluate come January.

He is playing Gio with Brodie.

That seems to be working.

Some of the special teams decisions are... not good. But, the team actually moves with pace now, rather than that plodding mess of garbage that was Gulutzan's system, so that's a major improvement.

I've never really liked a 1-3-1 formation, and Prout on the 3 on 5 PK. On the former though, the team started to adapt in the third and moved closer to a traditional set up.

Billy Beane: I should have made you a bigger part of the conversation from day one. That way we’d be clear what we’re trying to do here. That was my mistake, Art, and I take responsibility for that.

Art Howe: What are you trying to say?

Billy Beane: I’m saying it doesn’t matter what moves I make if you don’t play the team the way they’re designed to be played.

I'm still waiting on Operation : Roll Four Lines.

With Stone and Giordano off, and Hamonic hurt they really don't have many options though.

People need to realise that the dump and chase Is very much a legitimate offensive zone entry strategy and that every single team utilizes it

I think a big factor in my opinion will be if he can find some offence in the bottom 6. What I'd really like to see is some aggressive line blending, and then a willingness to double-shift whichever line finds some chemistry. So far it's been fairly stagnant, and I think now that we're confident Lindholm fits on the top line, we have to find some more combos that work.

I've been really happy with how the PP has adjusted through 2 games. I've seen 4 distinctly different breakouts and we've made changes when things haven't been working. For all the hate the drop pass gets, both of the 3rd period PP goals came after a drop pass to Gaudreau, and we've also seen some success gaining the zone with other breakouts. Predictability was our downfall last year so this is a really good sign. I also liked the way we attacked the net quickly after gaining the zone rather than always circling back to set up at the point. It really backs the D off and buys you more time for when you do intend to set up.

Based on Peters's comments that he's not happy with our 5v5 play, I'd hazard a guess he's defaulting to Ryan as 3C because Ryan knows the system better. If he's overusing Ryan in 5-10 games despite other players outperforming him then I'll be frustrated. I do think Bennett and Jankowski need some more ice time, at least 10-12 minutes even if they're the 4th line. Seems like they're not even getting as much PK time as they should, which is the real headscratcher to me. I'd rather have them play some hard PK minutes to keep guys like Backlund and Lindholm fresher for 5v5 play.
