A doctor was on CBC radio this morning talking about the use of ice for injuries - he said many people are getting frostbite from applying the ice for too long, but that is has been proven to help with pain.
The doctor who came up with RICE, has since said he was wrong:

Quote:
Since the late 1970s, medical practitioners have often treated an injury with RICE (rest, ice, compression and elevation). It’s an easy formula to remember: RICE is nice. The term was coined by Dr. Gabe Mirkin, a former assistant professor at the University of Maryland, in the bestselling Sports Medicine Book published in 1978. But even he has changed his mind. “Nobody believes in rest anymore,” he says. “You can get a hip replacement and you’re on the bike 12 hours after surgery.” As for ice, “there is no data to show that ice does anything more than block pain,” he says. “And there is data that shows it delays healing.” The mnemonic he made famous, however, remains prevalent. “RICE is just something that stuck—and it’s wrong,” Mirkin adds. “I’m partially responsible for this misinformation.”

I went to Intramed and was done in 6 minutes. Lots of people say they're recovered in a weekend. In my experience, it probably took two weeks before I started to feel normal again.
Get lots of rest, use frozen peas, and put on some tight underwear!

I completely agree. That was definitely the most traumatic!
And skipping that step is questionable. There are plenty of examples of guys who had the procedure and thought they were in the clear only to become father's again well after the fact. Like a couple years later.

I've been told it can take up to "50 shots" before the surgery has taken full effect. I don't know if time has an effect on that.

They say 3 months and 20-25 before you can get the test done.

They told me a year, so I did that and still wasn't "clear", so I had to go through the trauma of dropping off a second sample. Thank God that one was, but that was probably three years after the fact because I delayed as long as possible.

I took 2 weeks off hockey but probably could have played after a week. Riding a bike I'm not sure. But it all seems to be very subjective for each person. I know a few who played hockey after 2 days and others that waited a month.

^ This. Exactly this. While it didn't hurt at all, the feeling was way more unpleasant than I expected. I now live in fear it won't have worked and I'll have to go back.

Nah it'll likely be fine, but it did feel really weird having them tug on tubes that don't normally move that way.

i was the 1 in 10,000 or so that had some minor issues as i looked like i had been kicked by a mule, and the boys looked more like grapefruit than cherries.
took about two weeks or so before things had calmed down.
as i recall the funny part about dropping off the sample is that there is a form with tick boxes where you are supposed to indicate how the sample was generated - via hand or other metodologies

I got a note that he just retired. Another doctor took over his practice.

Clinics should start to use these to collect the samples.

Well, had my appointment at the Vasman clinic today, so doing a lot of resting and icing. Procedure wasn’t terrible, but I had an issue on the right side due to scar tissue from an inguinal hernia as a baby and likely getting hit with a billion pucks to the nuts while being a goalie. The boys feel fine, but I definitely have a lot of soreness in my lower abdomen, so I’m taking it very slow. My 4 and 2 year old love to play wrestle, so I’ll be keeping a watchful eye on that.

Hah! I had not thought of that! Our dog passed earlier this year, so no concerns there, but even if he was still around he was not the most active dog for sure. But, I can certainly imagine having a “love tackle” from a large dog in my current state of mobilization would not be good at all.
