You guys looking at CalgaryNEXT proposal with nostalgia are nuts! is it stockholm syndrome?

The presentation was brutal, the renderings were laughable. The idea of having the NHL rink attached to a Canadian Football League dome stadium was stupid. This along with the fact that the financials were a mess, a CRL would in no way cover the costs for the building or the area, it would have cannibalized the rest of the inner city, and the size of the facility would suck the life out of out the idea of having a live/work/play area.

This doesnt even include the fact that the likelihood of having that skyline in the renderings would take 20 years given the massive glut of commercial vacancy in this city.

The whole thing was a boondoggle when it was proposed and it is still a boondoggle in hindsight

Be thankful for the excuse to move into the 21st century? They are a unique draw, but the space and resources they use are pretty huge. Not to mention the bad press from crashes/deaths.

The only way I'd be interested in keeping the track is if they changed to MOTORCYCLE CHARIOT RACING:

The rodeo is too long and a little monotonous. Split it into afternoon and evening sessions with a little more other entertainment mixed in. Evening session could be shorter since they have the evening show.

It's weird if you're used to Calgary. Three wagons, no outriders, and two laps around the stadium...
That was like 3v3 hockey.

Looks like City of Calgary is willing to open up the agreement slightly.

It needed a monorail.

I imagine CSEC would come back to the table if the city re-engaged them on a 50/50 split, but I guess time will tell.

50/50 with CMLC as the developer/PM/whatever and I'm in.

Seems like an event center is happening with or without the Flames.

What's going on with that Rajen Ruperall fella?

CMLC should never have been kicked off this project. If I were The City, I'd insist that they remain on as part of any future arena deal.

I don't understand why they were removed in the first place.

All talk so far? He has an opportunity here to get involved and I am going to guess he won't dabble here.

I would think CMLC being removed from the deal was part of CSEC allowing the City of Calgary to back out of the 50/50 split.

They're paying a consultant to see if CSEC is interested in rejoining an event centre project?

a) of course they are, but on Murray Edwards' terms
b) given a) you're not going to get a better deal than you had, so is trying to get back together with your ex in the same arrangement really a good idea?

Because the flames agreed to cover cost overruns. Why would you let a third party be in control of your project.

CMLC likely will be part of the project again if the city is willing to go back to the 50/50 split, or put in the same money as CSEC. (Or more)

These guys don't do this kind of thing for fun. If someone like that gets involved, it's coming out of CSEC's future earnings from the building. From the city's perspective, wouldn't the door always have been open?

For CSEC, the city is a better economic partner because it's taxpayer subsidy.

Look at the Forbes NHL franchise valuations, Vegas is middle of the pack. They have $84 million of their valuation attached to the arena because it was privately funded. The Oilers? $208 million.
