Put the Flames in WinSport, guaranteed sellout every game. Jack ticket prices up 500% so that almost no one can go except the super rich. Flames and City save money on new arena development, everyone wins (except for the 15,000 fans that now can't attend).
THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX
Actually though...would Tsuu Tina be interested in having the new arena in their Taza development? Right beside the casino? Wouldn't that be a interesting plot twist!
Because prices on these mega projects go in one direction.
Take a commuter train to Banff - had they decided to do something like that in 1991, it would’ve cost hundreds of millions . Maybe it breaks a billion - now it’s likely such a multi-multi-billion Dollar effort that it’s not remotely worth doing.
There’s no reality where this project comes out costing less than $600M now that it needs to begin anew, just so they can arrive at the same place they already were.
But a pandemic that has supply lines and source materials challenged might sit out side the norm wouldn't it?
Inflation is pretty much a constant, but what we've seen on this building (up 28% or so in 18 months) is outside what you'd expect (3%)

Fair enough - is that what the Flames said though?
I think everyone would understand pausing the development before construction begins due to pandemic-related supply cost issues. That wouldn’t be a hard sell.
Now though, it’s like we’re right back to needing another mayor before the Flames commit to anything.

Flames owners walking away because of an added $12M on a project with a $600M-700M price tag? Sounds like they were looking for any excuse to back out.

It wasn't a $600-700m price tag when they signed the deal. As Bingo said upthread:

And if the city was pushing to add $12m on before the first shovel was in the ground, when it was still easy for CSEC to back out, how many more extra costs would they have added once construction began and CSEC had no choice but to comply? Neither side can exactly claim to be operating in good faith here.

Black diamond had a nice outdoor rink. Maybe the owners will throw a few more bleachers in and a hotdog vender. I’ll stream the game on my YouTube channel.
Flames needed a reason to back out and Joyti didn't want to be a scapegoat so she got out in front of it. Kinda pissed of the flames but they knew Joyti isn't the mayor you'll get anything extra from but she maybe the mayor when they revisit the project. Didn't want to burn any bridges.
This is due to inflation costs, not because the deal was sour - they overrun on cost estimates would be astronomical to any quotes to be produced Intime for shovels in the ground.. I know a guy who knows a guy at Orange Julius.

I really don’t see how some sort of compromise cannot be reached on this deal. For what amounts to a year of Blake Coleman, we’re really not getting a new building?
I see you've never dealt with Murray Edwards before
I don't remember who posted it originally, but it honestly seems like every year there is a problem with this team. Whether it the players, racist coaches, Covid, arena deals, it's like there's always something to bring the mood down.

I remember when they let go of a bunch of staff when covid first hit and the CSEC didn’t do anything for them.
It’s weird you guys aren’t kind of more pissed off or something.
You do know that, regardless of what’s said, it’s either a new arena or the team leaves eventually, right? There’s no way the NHL lets a team play in a 40 year old building for long, at least not without a plan in place. There will start to be considerable pressure over the next few years to find a solution, and if that solution isn’t a new arena, well…

Taza isn’t really by the Grey Eagle casino and it’s not anywhere near close enough to be like an entertainment district. Is there another casino they are developing that you are referring to.
The arena deal is as much a real estate development play to CSEC as is the facility itself. See the ICE District in Edmonton. They wouldnt get the same control or return on Tsuutina land.
They'd almost be better off resurrecting Calgary NEXT.
