Sorry but Vezina votes don't mean #### when you can't stop 80% of the shots the stinking Oilers take on you.

It’s almost as if all the pundits want Johnny to leave, which is hilarious to me because the potential legacy in Johnny’s grasps right now, a chance to be a bigger player for this franchise that Iginla was, the season he just had, that’s a great story in this sport if it can happen.

Some of you jamokes can swim in the "Oilers are no good!" thread but they made it to the third round of the playoffs and McDavid, Draisaitle and Evander Kane aren't exactly bad offensive players.

Sure, Montreal made the finals and next season were in last place.

Yeah, I'm not arguing that the Oilers are going to have some sustained success after this but pretending they didn't have a dynamic offensive team in this years playoffs is foolish. Not defending Markstrom's play either but those three Oiler players ate us alive, not just the goalie.

Of course they do, that's like 5-10 articles worth of material.

which is what was rumoured as the opening offer in this thread.

8 x $9.5 is not enough. If that’s all we’ve offered, I don’t think he’s signing that.

Where did he say this. That lines up with the offer rumored by a poster a couple weeks ago.

Flames need to step it up

^^ I suspect that’s Friedman just guessing numbers based on other signings. I’ve seen other opinion pieces coming in that low, but they were all based on recent contracts and not the underlying negotiations, which I suspect will take the Flames to well over 10.

Edit: more analytical pieces like evolving hockey and this one have him at 10.5 or so:

Isn’t that what was already speculated? It’s gotta be over 10. 10.5 would be my guess. I’m resigning myself to being disappointed. For Flames fans.. this is the way.

Yeah, but isn't that how these negotiations work? The team offers low, the player counters too high and they meet in the middle. So, I'm guessing they are waiting to counter offer once Johnny decides if he wants to stay... because if they counter and Calgary accepts then it is basically a done deal. My feeling is if Johnny wants to stay, maybe they counter at 12.5, Calgary comes back at 10.5 and they eventually settle around 11.

Even as a cheapstake fantasy GM like I am when I'm armchair GM'ing, I figure Gaudreau staying in CGY costs at minimum, 80 million dollars over the length of the contract. 9.5 seems a titch low.

Personally I'd love to sign a player as low as humanly possible. But when you're competing with Geography, you gotta pony up.

What is being implied is the flames have an offer and the Gaudreau camp has not countered and is sitting on the offer. Soon enough the Flames will have to up their offer. Treliving said yesterday they will take this right up to the 13th if they have to but I really wonder what happens if they can’t get Johnny and Chucky signed? Some of the insiders have been mentioning they think the flames want an answer one way or the other sooner than that so they have time to pivot if need be.
