If Forsberg gets done for around $8.5 that's probably good for the Flames.
He's probably a direct comparable for Tkachuk in terms of points and goals last year (Tkachuk and Forsberg both had 42 goals, and if you look at Forsberg's pro-rated points it's similar too).
Also think that if Forsberg is $8.5M then it's easier to get Gaudreau around $9.5M / $10M. Honestly in the end I still think this gets done for Gaudreau at $10M x 8 but the Flames are hoping he will come down a little.

Wasn't the conspiracy theory that gaudreauvertime was the agent for Johnny?

Some thought it was a family member, others thought it was someone who worked for the agent IIRC

Tkachuk is getting at least $9M on his qualifying offer, and likely more if he chooses arbitration. Little chance he'll forgo UFA without a huge over payment.
If Johnny would sign for $10M, it would already be done.

You can't possibly know that.

I feel like the 7.9M for Fiala definitely pushes Chucky over the $10M per threshold Really I think if the Flames sign Johnny that will be the benchmark for Chucky. It won’t be much less if not the same amount

Not likely. Gaudreau would certainly accept $10m if he didn't think he could get a better offer. But no matter what offer the Flames have made, his agent will be advising him to wait and try to squeeze out a little more.

I fully expect Johnny to get an AAV above $10M per season.
But I'm on record of saying I think his refusal to sign/perhaps even negotiate is entirely based on him trying to decide where he wants to play.
Once he decides that, he will then try to squeeze his suitors/suitor. But I expect that number will be $10M+.

Maybe 25 years from now when Johnny is retired he lets slip that he joined some random Calgary forum during his first contract negotiation to try and convince Calgary fans of his worth
Johnny if you are Gaudreauvertime and are reading this, we already think you're worth it.

That's why getting Gaudreau locked up, or at least knowing his intentions is ultra important right now. The worst thing that would happen is if they don't have time to lock down Tkachuk and he simply accepts his qualifying offer.

Eric Francis is already saying Tkachuk is not signing a long term deal here. Did I not say this is exactly what he would pivot to once he failed at running Gaudreau out of town? So predictable.

Sounds like Forsberg is staying? Good. Dude is a good player, but he isn’t a player we should be signing if we lose Johnny.
There is no smart play to be made in free agency if we lose Johnny. If Johnny goes, stay the hell out of free agency. There’s only mediocrity with a side dish of long-term salary-cap pain in that market.

Tkachuk as an RFA on a non max term contract isn’t exactly a stretch.

As of today Johnny Gaudreau remains undecided on Calgary's offer.
sounds like Gaudreau wants to keep Calgary in the fold but may also want to take a peek at other offers there are which isn't ideal for the Flames.

If he was from Western Canada he'd already be signed IMO
So frustrating having geography continually bone you.

Well if he hasn’t signed what Friedman and then his Agent thing are his best chances at the biggest payday, to me that points to hoping to get a like offer but from a team out east closer to home.

Gaudreau will sign with the Flames on the 12th of July after finding out the offers from other teams aren't as attractive as Calgary's. If not, things will get really dark. Gaudreau will be gone, Tkachuk will sign his qualifying offer, Sutter will retire, and "The Rebuild" will be forced on the team. Treliving will be shown the door and the team will begin the "Great Sell-off" of anyone with value. The dominoes are set up. All they need is that first one to topple. I believe Gaudreau will stay and the only tough decision Treliving will have to make is which team to dump Mangiapane on to create cap space.
