Good for him. He was probably able to pay off his 1BR condo with his last $5M deal, and now Sven can truly begin to experience life as a millionaire in Vancouver.

I'm jealous.

If he stays healthy he's a 45 to 50 point guy. Better than some of the UFA deals seen today

I'm happy for Baertschi getting his pay-day. Canucks are going nowhere the next couple of seasons. At least people get paid to go nowhere.

Won't be popular with some, but this reinforces that Sven made absolutely the right choice in forcing a trade. For multiple reasons, he was being buried down the depth chart in Calgary. Goes to a team that plays him in the NHL. Performs. Gets Paid.

It's what I would have done, to be quite honest.

Also true. Win-win, some hopefully some posters can let go of their bitterness.

Beartchi - Horvat - Boeser will be the top line next season.

I think he can push 40+ points with more ice time and pp1 opportunity if he stays healthy.

good deal.

Pretty much anyone, playing with Horvat and Boeser, and getting PP1 time, would get 40 points.

Ugh. The narrative is getting old.

Baertschi was traded and then immediately dispatched to the Utica Comets. While playing with the Comets he incurred a tonne of criticism from his head coach, Travis Green, for not being hard enough away from the puck, and for his underwhelming competitiveness. He made an appearance in the SC playoffs that year and was completely invisible. It was not until Baertschi made significant changes to his own game—changes that were required by BOTH the Flames AND the Canucks organizations—that he finally started to turn things around.

He was initially sent to the Canucks AHL team when the trade went down, playing 15 games, but was called up to end the NHL season and never looked back. You make it sound like he continued to toil in the minors until he made big changes, which is not true.

Holding onto him would have probably meant him going to Europe. He told the team he wasn't going to re-sign.

Has he ever had a healthy season though? Going all the way back to Junior he has missed significant time every year.

And you make it sound as though he was given an opportunity and made the most of it right off the bat. He was waiver-eligible in his first full season with the Canucks and was really only on the roster by necessity. Through the first three months of the season he was borderline useless; Canucks fans and media were convinced he would be little better than a career AHL/NHL 'tweeter; he had 2 goals and 6 points in his first 25-games.

Baertschi deserves credit for becoming a regular NHL player, but his early struggles had much more to do with him than it did Flames management, and the first several months following his trade to the Canucks amply demonstrated as much.
