If they are out of the playoffs and selling again next year then Gio might not have a lot of trade value. This year he could be a boost to the 4-5 spot on a good team.

On the other hand if Gio and the Flames rebound next year it would line up the possibility of Gio doing the Thornton/Marleau/Spezza role as a 1 x 1 with him being a regular 5-6 and fill in roles in the top-4. Rather that was with the Flames rather than the Leafs.
In my view his expiring contract gives him more value next TDL

I think usage matters though. Montour may be suited to play third pair with PP time on a team that does not have dog shat coaching and team mates. Zach Bogosian was almost mocked out of the league from playing in Buffalo. He played in 20 playoff games for Tampa. Playoff bound teams are looking for depth and guys who in a pinch can move up in the lineup.

So in this case Colorado sees Nemeth as a 7 who can be a 5-6. Florida sees Montour as a 5-6 who could be used a 4 if injuries hit.

Seems about right in a year where the Flames are selling rentals a cheap.

I liked Montour on the Ducks and there is a reason the Sabres gave up a 1st to get him. I suspect this will be a Buffalo stink scenario where he is much better in Florida. I could still see Montour as a number 4 Dman on a good team

I was thinking the opposite. A third is too much for me. But part of that is I don't think highly of Montour overall, and the other part is that he's just a rental.

Meh, I don't love the deal, but we needed another defender who could possibly play on the PP.

Bad deal for Buffalo. Worth more than a 3rd.

No team is likely better than Tampa.

Of course, the best team seldom wins the Stanley Cup.

A short series and the randomness involved virtually guarantees that.

Would be funny if the Panthers bounced them out on a bad goal call.

You could show me all the advanced stats on Montour from Buffalo, and I still would not believe he's a bad player. There's been lots of talk about how playing D under Kruger is no picnic (I know he ain't there anymore), and I would all for rescuing Miller or Risto from that team, now that Montour is gone. There was plenty of games when Monty played in ANA where I really noticed him in a positve way, over guys like Lindholm and Fowler. Too bad we didn't get him.

I feel like every player on Buffalo would have bad advanced stats. Buffalo has very few wins, so in an accurate statistical model, their players should have a very low WAR %, no?

Although, on the flip side a lot of these players probably aren't very good or the team would be a lot better than they are.
