Lindell had 23 ES points, 7 PPP this past year -

Some comparables:
Marc-Edouard Vlasic - 24 ES points, 1 PPP ($7M cap hit)
Jaccob Slavin - 22 ES points, 7 PPP ($5.3M)
Tyler Myers - 22 ES points, 7 PPP (80 GP) ($5.5M, UFA coming up)
Hampus Lindholm - 21 ES points, 7 PPP (76 GP) ($5.2M)
Colton Parayko - 19 ES points, 8 PPP (80 GP) ($5.5M)
Brady Skjei - 24 ES points, 0 PPP (78 GP) ($5.25M)
Kevin Shattenkirk - 21 ES points, 7 PPP (73 GP, and not representative of his historical PPP, but this is what he had this past season) ($6.65M)

So based on that list, no that far off just based on points. I don't watch enough Dallas hockey to know if Lindell stacks up to the above list defensively, but points wise this contract is not out of the ordinary, considering the cap continues to go up.

I didn't think he was all that great in the Nashville series but the media kept hyping him. More than a few defensive gaffs and giveaways.

People have to keep in mind that he is only 24. I'm sure Dallas is expecting him to grow and get better.

It's not a great deal or anything, but it's not bad.

Confirmation/recency bias is a hell of drug.

They are banking on player growth and cap inflation. The David Poile method.

The playoffs count. He has virtually the same playoff record as a 24 year old as 35 year old soon to be Norris trophy winner Giordano.

Stop living in the 2000s, cap goes up all the time, not an overpayment for a D who plays 25minutes a game with a high standard.

A bit of an overpay, but only by $1m or so. Not a huge deal.

He did have the 11th most giveaways amongst defensemen this season, with 92 and only had 30 takeaways. He also gives up more chances than he creates. Some of the worst possession stats on his team.

I am sure he is a capable youngish defenseman, but he probably should have come in at around Hanifin's number or lower.
