Hate losing Bergen.
Apparently Atkins says they took Luciano because they think he can make the team out of camp and stick...18 years old.
Will be interesting to follow that through camp.
He can hit 96-96 mph with his fastball and has a plu curve.

I imagine he'll more pitch a garbage inning twice a month while throwing side sessions inbetween phantom DL stints where he'll get "rehab" starts.

Can confirm #BlueJays have landed RHP Matt Shoemaker on a one-year deal.
The 32-year-old right-hander has struggled with arm injuries recently, limiting him to 31 IP in 2018, but he’s been decent at times when healthy.
Seasons of 2.1 and 3.5 WAR in 2014 and 2016.

Just kind of interesting that this is from USA Today, and not from Toronto Awesome Weekly.
"it also allows one to indulge this vision: Guerrero and Harper in the middle of Toronto’s lineup for nearly seven seasons."

Sounds like they are doing this for every team though, so I wouldn't read into it as any type of hype or see it as a possibility. :

The Toronto Blue Jays are close to acquiring left-hander Clayton Richard from the San Diego Padres, sources told Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.

The Toronto Blue Jays have acquired left-hander Clayton Richard and cash from the San Diego Padres for minor-league outfielder Connor Panas, the team announced Sunday.
San Diego designated Richard for assignment on Dec. 20.
Richard, 35, made 27 starts for the Padres last season, authoring a 5.33 ERA in 158 2/3 innings.

So far this off-season - chumps. Not every move has to be big, but you can't say they're rebuilding if you don't make moves to get legit prospects. Getting D-grade players isn't doing anything for now or the future. Such a weird rebuild philosophy for me.

What are they supposed to trade in order to get legit prospects?

Any combination of the below players:
Travis
Smoak
Pillar
Morales
Martin
Sanchez
Stroman
Giles
Ignore Stroman and Sanchez for a bit and you see the rest with different arrays of value who have little value for the Jays in the future. Deal any combination of those guys for prospects. Giles could probably himself get a decent return. If getting higher quality prospects is the name of the game, then deal any of the above guys and pair with Grichuk or Drury. The team can get creative. Holding onto guys longer than we should have last season was a bad idea, and repeating those same mistakes this year won't help us down the road. Can't do it half-assed.

None of those hitters are getting you a top 100 prospect

You don't get elite prospects unless you give up elite talent and the Jays dont have that to give. Only way Jays are getting top level prospects is if they move Stroman and Sanchez and even then the returns arnt likely going to be fantastic, especially considering what Paxton got.
Top prospects are becoming very challenging to acquire.

#Bluejays point out in their release announcing the trade that Clayton Richard has been the most effective NL pitcher at inducing ground balls over the past four years. That’s a good thing.
2019 rotation: Stroman, Sanchez, Borucki, Shoemaker, Richard. #ForNow

I'll take it with a grain of salt. His numbers looked pretty atrocious. Picking one stat is PR fodder. I'm sure they think they can work with him to improve, but I have no confidence whatsoever in players like this. Maybe one in every five will work out, and when they do they'll be wildly inconsistent. Not holding my breath.

This is a development year. Most of the Jays future core, or high level prospects if you will, are already in the system. Some of them are already knocking on the door too.
Unless the Jays get massive development from those players and potentially a few other surprise performances from some of the veterans, next season is a complete write off competitively.
So, signings and trades like these ones are not surprising at all. Just filler to get through a development year while making the young pitchers battle for innings at the major league level.

Clayton Richard doesn’t need to be good he just needs to start 30 or so games and pitch 150+ innings and do it for really cheap. Which he is going to do. This is the rebuild. The Jays are going to be bad this year, probably around a 65 - 70 win territory.
I agree with those saying the Jays should have traded their top guys earlier and miscalculated their competive window. Seeing those potential deals for Donaldson hurts and that is on Shapiro and Atkins for botching that.
If Sanchez and Stroman can put together some good seasons then deal them at the trade deadline and net a decent return. I could see some top 100 prospects coming back the other way with those guys seeing as they have a year of control left.

and in a perfect world, Sean Reid Foley takes Richards spot in the rotation and you either put him in bullpen or he's gone altogether which is fine because he is cheap.
This is the type of move you should want in a rebuild. Takes pressure of someone like SRF having to pitch if he isn't ready, but is accommodating if he earns it on merit.

I love this move ! He should go about 5-15 and help us get a better pick !
Jays should be aiming for a bottom 5 finish this year

Man I wish they'd trade Pillar already. I really don't want to see him taking a roster spot anymore.
Let Alford and Pompey battle for the CF reps and if they both suck then slide Grichuk to CF.
