"Cost effective" is pretty broad when it comes to app development because there are so many different types of apps you could want made. Because of that variety, the developer may need to have a specific set of skills to make it happen.

What kind of app is it and what platform (iOS, Android) are you looking to put an app on?

Depending on the app, most local developers in Calgary wouldn't touch your app for less than 5 figures.

And getting what you pay for is very much in effect in app development. I've been involved in projects to re-develop apps where the apps were "completed" and the people spent a lot of money, and what they got was garbage that, while meeting the letter of requirements, wouldn't help the person achieve their business goals.

It would be helpful to know more about your requirements. How complicated is the app? Do you have designs created or is that part of the ask too? Are you targeting iOS and Android or just one? What about tablets?

PM me if you want to talk more about it. There aren't a lot of app development companies in Calgary, and even less freelancers. You should also have an idea of your budget because none of them come cheap. That said, I might be able to point you in the right direction if I had a better idea of what you're looking for.

He seems fairly happy with them although their quoted completion date has somehow been thrown out the window and its taking forever by the sounds of it. I guess that's what you pay for. At least there is progress.
