IIRC they were already tried found guilty, sentenced to lengthy prison terms and ordered deported after their sentences are complete. I think that happened a month or so ago in closed court.

Right now we don't have any leverage. It doesn't sound like the Americans asked for the release of the Michaels as part of the deal. So the Chinese don't care, they'll probably press on Huwei or an improved trade deal in exchange for the Michaels being set free.

We clearly don't have that strong of a relationship with the Americans where they pressed on our behalf as in put them on a plane right fricken now.

Lesson from all this is Canadians best avoid going to or doing business with China.

Oh wait, Olympics.

And the Americans are in no way going to be advocating for Canada in any way whatsoever. That is, if this plays out the way we all think it will.

The American's already see us as too close to the Chinese government, so this clears the plate. They probably have it figured that Justin is bound and determined to let Huwei into the 5G up here anyways so why go to bat for us.

The Chinese now can use the Michaels for other purposes.

I still fully expect they're going to put a bullet in the back of the head of the other Canadian that's there for drug offenses.

If she pleads guilty and pays a fine, that's great but Canada needs to announce that they're following the rest of our allies in banning the Huawei from 5 G and any other key research projects in universities etc.

I'm no Trudeau fan, but his government backroom'd the Telco's (BELL & TELUS), into diverting their carrier-grade purchasing away from Huawei, and to Nokia & Ericsson.

Sorry, I’m not caught up on all of this -

Who are these Michaels? Why them?

Very happy to hear this news. Good for the Micheals and their families for finally getting the chance to reunite. These past 3 years must have been unimaginable for them.

These two never should have been abducted and locked away based on sham charges. Shameful, despicable action by China to rob these men of 3 years of their lives and put them and their families through hell.

I don’t think anyone gets credit here.

The only good news is the 2 innocent people getting released.

Robert Schellenberg is a known associate of the UN gang in the lower mainland and has a history of drug trafficking. He was caught smuggling 226 keys of meth into Australia on these charges.

Death sentence aside, I have zero issues with a career criminal who tried to move 226 kg of meth destined for people in Australia (including kids) being punished for doing terrible things.

Going to be hard for China to claim those two weren't hostages.

Yeah. To me, their release likely has little to do with our government negotiating anything and it was a decision made by China to make a point.

Maybe, but my guess is the FA office negotiated with the US district attorney/State Dept. to drop the extradition request if she instead pled guilty to their charges and payed a fine, all while making a deal with China that they would arrange that deal if they released the Michaels.

I doubt they even care to make that claim. From their perspective, Wanzhou was imprisoned on a politically motivated charge by the Trump administration (which is basically true), so they grabbed a couple of Canadians who they could pin some flimsy charges on to get leverage. And it looks like it worked.

Spavor, Kovrig, and Canada just had the misfortune of getting stuck in the crossfire of US/Chinese tensions.

I don't get me wrong, I have no trouble with what he gets. I'm not going to cry about his faith. But he was part of the pressure package by the Chinese.

I'm happy that the Michael's are coming home, That's right now what matters. But Canada has to re-evaluate our relationship with China in a serious manner. Our allies have lost trust in us. We've had cash for access events to the PM paid for by Chinese nationals. WE haven't made any kind of decision on Huwei and our allies don't trust us with security matters.

Why is the title of this thread incorrect? There was no guilty plea, the opposite in fact.
