Finally did it...Who likes beer?
I went through my old posts to see when I posted here about getting into the beer business and was surprised to see that it was close to three years ago when I posted it. So, after a lot of work I can say that we finally have our own brewing company and have beer on the shelves of select liquor stores across the province.
We've changed our business plan a few times to adjust to not only the beer market but the provincial market as well, with that said we are currently contract brewing and do not have our own brick and mortar brewery yet. It is truly a family business with no outside investors at this time and I still have my day job as well so it makes for a busy work week and doesn't leave much time for browsing Calgary Puck. We had just brewed our first batch of beer when Covid started creeping out of China as luck would have it, so we have been unable to market our product other than through social media and word of mouth. We had one tasting at Collective Craft here in Calgary before everything shut down. With that said, sales have been steady and our second beer will be available come July. We're on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram for anyone interested. Feedback is also appreciated.
So with that said, and in an effort to further shamelessly promote our business, I wanted to introduce you all to Buffalo 9 Brewing Co. Being the military history keener that I am, we have molded our brand around Canadian Military History with an effort to keep people remembering our past and maybe learn a little bit as well.
Our logo is our representation of the cap badges the Canadian Expeditionary Force wore in the First World War. Our name pays homage to 9 Canadian Peacekeepers who died when their DeHavilland Buffalo aircraft was shot down over Syria in the early 70s. And our beer labels each tell a cool story, not only about our military history but stories that my wife and I have a bit of a connection with.
Here is our logo:
Here is our first beer that is currently on store shelves, a tasty IPA with Tangerine and Grapefruit notes:
And for those of you who aren't into IPA's, here is our Pilsner that will be out in early July...its a German style Pilsner, crisp and clean flavor.

What portion sizes are you selling in? I'm trying to do my best to buy local so even a 4 or 6 pack is something I'd be interested in

Good on you for doing a pilsner and not just a bunch of hopped out beers.

Any particular chains you have partnered up with? It says “select”. Just curious, since I’m sure the CP community would love to support as well as try it out and will be easier that way.

I wonder if it's available at any of the stores in Lethbridge. I'd give it a try.

an excellent bit of marketing would be to provide links to your website and social media accounts.
Also:
Where can I get your beer?
Where are you located?

Seconded, I'm not an IPA guy at all. I'll take a look for the pilsner when I am out.

I'm hoping this pilsner can fill the void left by Caravel.

Our beer comes in 473ml cans and is sold in four packs and some stores sell it as singles.

Here is a link to a map of stores that have stocked our beer in the last couple of months, it doesn't mean that they still have it in stock though so its always best to call them first to make sure.

We're mostly in independent liquor stores at the moment but that is soon changing. Sobey's allowed us to sell our beer out of the Safeway Liquor Store in Shawnessy for a month and sales went well so we are now on their approved list for all Sobey's and Safeway liquor stores as June 1st. So we are now engaging those stores and our beer will hopefully start appearing in Sobey's across Alberta within the next couple of weeks.
Next on our list will be Co-Op liquor stores and going through their process.

Looks great! I'll be looking out for this and helping boost your untappd! The NEIPA has a nice IBU but doesn't look hazy enough to be a NEIPA.

Spirits of Cranston are carrying it by the looks of that website.
I like this idea, a lot.
I'd love to see a connection with Calgary based Units, Calgary Highlanders & King's Own Calgary Regiment.
Walcheren Wheat Ale
Dieppe Dark Ale
Also, a PPCLI brew, Kapyong Kolsch
Yeah the more I type the more I like this idea.
I hope it goes well for you. I'm gonna grab some of your beer this week.
I have one question. Is there a component of your business that gives back to the military or veterans organizations?

Funny you should mention this...I totally agree. This was a great learning experience for me in the jump to commercial brewing, what works on a small homebrew scale doesn't always work on a larger commercial scale. This beer is less hazy than it should be as a result. We are almost sold out of this original batch and once we are we will be "tweaking" the recipe so that when we brew it again it will have haziness expected, it does still have the taste though
I also just want to say to everyone, thank you for the support/interest. Our number one issue is that nobody knows us yet and Covid really did a number on what we were planning as far as marketing goes. We had beer festivals and tastings planned as well as some appearances and sponsorships at some unique events all of which were of course cancelled do to the pandemic and if it wasn't for social media we would have been in trouble due to bad timing.
