Probably don't need wifi on the board. This computer will be hard wired to the internet 100% of the time.

Family friend has an older i7 16gb toshiba. Is it worth spending a couple hundred dollars on a 5-6 year old laptop? It is very similar to this one:

https://www.amazon.ca/Toshiba-Satell.../dp/B00F1K67WE

Has the ram and cpu as suggested

I have no use for wi-fi on a motherboard so why pay for it? On the case you're getting does it have a USB type C port? Reason I ask is most X570 boards don't have one on the back panel (the Aorus does not) only a header on the motherboard. Keep that in mind if you want USB C.

edit - I checked the 500D has a front USB 3.1 type C port on the front panel you're good.

I agree wifi is probably not that useful, but what about Bluetooth? I haven’t ever personally had Bluetooth in a pc, but seems like it’s worth considering for connecting a controller or maybe a headset. Maybe there’s a more economical way to add it after if you decide you want it at some point? Interested to hear thoughts, since I’m definitely not speaking from experience.

Depending on price difference, a USB Bluetooth 5.0 dongle on Amazon is like $10-15. Wifi (USB, PCE-E, or otherwise) is a bit pricier.

Good point. I hadn't considered that. I could see myself wanting to connect my PS4 controller, but as Psycnet said maybe it's a better option to just get a bluetooth usb dongle?

What kind of latency do these dongles have? I didn't have much success with a cheapo one I bought on Amazon.

In my experience mobo integrated bluetooth is pretty finnicky anyway.
In the 3 I've had it would constantly disconnect and re-connect my bluetooth mouse, plus it had to be within like 1 foot to work properly. Same with whenever I try and use my bluetooth speaker with it.

Despite having bluetooth in both my computers I still use a wired headset and switched my mouse back to old fashioned usb 2.4ghz wireless

Bluetooth in general is pretty crap, let's be honest.

It is a couple years old now but works decently. Should I be shooting for the same specs? Or do you look for something with an i7? I will be using a docking station to hook up to 2 monitors so screen resolution doesn't really matter to me. Trying to keep purchase around 500-600

My wife got one of these and while normally I'd stay out of the $700 price range myself it's pretty decent for the price. But it might not have enough CPU for you.

Right? I have to turn my laptop sideways on my TV stand otherwise the Bluetooth controller won't work at maybe 5ft. I'm in a recliner so I can move my feet and get signal, lol.

My RF kb&m reach further.

RF is much more reliable but doesn't have universal pairing. Give and take I guess.

since portability doesn't matter does it make sense to get something like this? Provides upgrade ability and little more power. Or is it overkill?

I don't get how it's overkill with a GeForce 1050. It's the same card in the Surface Book 2 I use for work (not a gaming laptop) and it struggles with any modern game beyond low settings

I won't really be using it for gaming at all. Maybe occasional cs 1.6 maybe GO.

Yeah it bugs me that my 16 year old nephew just built a computer and it has 3 times as many cores as my computer.. now I've got to buy the 16 core AMD just to keep my nerd cred!

Just picked this up off amazon. Seems to be decent specs for price. Will keep an eye out for other Black Friday deals but will be a good place holder if nothing else comes up

Reviews for the new AMD 3970x threadripper is out. Absolutely destroys anything existing in the HEDT space. Nuts
