I’ll happily rock my Tkachuk and Gio (with an A).

I think we will! Didn't Czarnik wear 27 in Boston?

Monahan, Gaudreau, Ehlers, Pastarnak, Barkov, Mackinnon, Forsberg, Larkin, are all some nice comparables in that ~6.5M range signed by 60 point forward+ at the time.

Ehler's in particular is nice as it kicks in this year, he signed it coming off a 25-39-64 season as a left winger less than a year ago. 6M at 7 years. Not at all the same type of player, but a pretty strong comparable to him. Especially with Ehlers scoring 29 last year. Would be hard to argue that he's significantly worthy of more cash than Ehler at this stage of his career.

Of course then we have Draisaitl making 8.5M...

Wow, if I'm reading capgeek correctly, he made $21m his first couple seasons with St Louis.

He's not going to sign an 8 year deal at that amount, but could easily sign for 6 years at those numbers

The problem from his point of view of an 8 year deal is that it makes him a UFA 2-years older, than a 6-year deal which makes it quite a bit more difficult to get that next 8 year deal.

Since the start of the 2016-17 season, the only two forwards with superior shot rates to Tkachuk’s are a pair of Bruins: Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand. That’s pretty elite company and speaks to how mature Tkachuk’s game is this early in his career.

To be up over 56% with a negative offensive zone start ratio is notable, especially considering the caliber of opposition Tkachuk faces on a nightly basis. And, despite a defensively slanted role, his five-on-five scoring sits in the top third of NHL forwards.

I could see something like $50,000,000 over 8 years.

Cap hit is manageable at $6,250,000 and $50,000,000 is a helluva big number. Both parties walk away feeling like they won.

Why not the same 6 x $5.5M deal Horvat got last year?

Love the player but don't think he's worth more than 5.5 right now. Obviously he will have a higher AAV as the Flames buy some years/pay for potential, but I think it is 6.5ish.

I could see that too, and that would be a bargain for what he brings IMO. I have a feeling Tkachuk's contract is going to be the biggest in Flames history. But the kid is worth every penny. He's going to be the heart and soul of the Franchise, if he isn't already.

Flames will have to overpay in the short term for future potential. 50mm 8 years seems like a nice round number.

The only guy on your list that will be the heart and soul of the franchise might be Mackinnon.... but in colorado there was Landeskog who was made captain just before he turned 20. Landeskog got extended with a year left on his ELC (same situation as Tkachuk) 5.571 x 7 with the cap at 64.3

The cap has gone up to 79.5 and increase of 15.2M or 23.6 %

5.571 x 1.23639 = 6.89

890k yr premium to be captain over someone like Ehlers... seems pretty reasonable. like a deal. just for talking to the press.

I think that pretty much everyone is boosting Tkachuk's scoring stats as he is the only guy on Oling's list ( outside of Larkin) that had as weak linemates as Backlund and Frolik.

Do the Flames wait a year and see what numbers puts up this coming season 60, 70 or 80 ?[/QUOTE]

Cap increase is 15.2mm an increase of 24% if the numbers you pulled are correct. You were off by 10mm

The Flames currently have 7.54 mill in cap space and are set to have 7.75 million worth of one way contracts come off the cap by next off season (15.29 mill) With Noah taking a 7 x 4.75 type contract that brings our expected cap space by next offseason to 10.54 mill.

Smith - 4.25 mill
Lazar - 950k
Kulak - 900k
Hathaway - 850k
Prout - 800k

Players expecting a Raise
Bennett - 1.95 - increase to 3 x 3.575 (+1.58) (Backlund’s bridge deal)
Tkachuk - 925k - increase to 8 x 6.75 (+5.825)

That uses 10.325 mill up and doesn’t consider player bonuses, the need to either reup Smith for a year or find a veteran backup, graduating Andersson/Valimaki/Dube etc.

Frolik and Stone are the odd men out at some point this season or by next offseason at the latest IMO.

I think depending on the year Bennett has that he will have done enough by that point in his career than Backlund had done by the end of 14-15 when he extended for 3 x 3.575 especially with how much the cap has increased.

Backlund
Year _ GP _ G _ A _ Pts _ +\-
9/10 _ 23 _ 1 _ 9 _ 10 _ +5
10/11_ 73 _ 10 _ 15 _ 25 _ +4
11/12 _ 41 _ 4 _ 7 _ 11 _ -13
12/13 _ 32 _ 8 _ 8 _ 16 _ -6
13/14 _ 76 _ 18 _ 21 _ 39 _ +4
14/15 _ 63 _ 11 _ 18 _ 29 _ +4 *includes playoffs

Bennett
Year _ GP _ G _ A _ Pts _ +\-
14/15_ 12 _ 3 _ 2 _ 5 _ -1 *includes playoffs
15/16_ 77 _ 18 _ 18 _ 36 _ -11
16/17_ 81 _ 13 _ 13 _ 26 _ -16
17/18_ 82 _ 11 _ 15 _ 26 _ -18

Bennett has been a lot more durable than Backlund thus far and about as productive if not slightly more consistently through his first 3 full seasons and that can be attested in large part to the amount of games he’s been able to average per season. If he can take a step forward I think he’s easily worth a 3 x 3.575 type bridge deal.
