I'm happy with the swap. Rychel has 41 NHL games under his belt already. 3 goals and 11 assists in those games.

Neither player looks like they'll pan out but Rychel has shown more to this point.

Man, I've wanted that guy on the Flames for a long while. Hopefully he earns a spot. Dudes got some size and jam along with a decent skillset.

This is a pretty cool trade.

I figured Shinkaruk was on his way out based on how long he went unsigned. Suspect that he requested a trade to some place that he could get playing time.

Rychel seems like one of those guys who's been on the Flames radar for a while. Will be interesting to see if he competes for a spot at camp.

Had no idea he went to MTL after his stint on the Leafs. IIRC, drafted by CLB, traded to TML and then the Habs?

I think Rychel has a better shot at making it into NHL games this season than Shinkaruk did.

I also think that Shinkaruk being in the organization served as a block for other prospects (Klimchuk) who may now get a call up.

Shinkaruk's aquisition was a worthwhile risk. He didn't fit with us, flip the asset and try again.

Good move.

From 2015: Flames scouting Kerby Rychel?

Treliving vs Bergevin is about as big of a mismatch you could have when it comes to trading. The result reflects that. That's a fleecing as far as i'm concerned.

Sunday, 06.30.2013 / 9:54 PM / 2013 NHL Draft

Quote:
The mood lightens when the Calgary Flames step up to make the sixth pick of the draft.

"I think this is it," Kerby Rychel says.

He's not talking about himself. He thinks this is where Monahan might get picked. When the Flames confirm his suspicions, the entire section, which includes members of Monahan's family, goes wild. Monahan's 94-year-old great-grandfather, Terry, even leaps to his feet.

"That's awesome," Kerby says.

In a perfect world, Rychel would play alongside his friend in Calgary. The Flames have the 22nd pick in the first round, so it's a possibility. But no one sees Kerby still being available then.

"Hey Kerby," Monahan's uncle Bob says. "Too bad you can't stick around until 22."

"That would be sick," Rychel says.

Is Rychel below or above Klimchuk as far as ceiling?... current depth chart?

This seems like a good trade... a player that likely to be a bottom 6 player for a guy that's too 6 or bust, that just seems like much more likely to be the latter.

Can you really call it a fleecing when it's a fairly minor trade? At best Rychel is a small upgrade but it's still tweener for tweener, no?

I like it, both players could use a fresh start I guess. Hopefully Rychel earns a spot.

Good luck to Shinkaruk. Being a Flames fan growing up, I hoped it'd work out for him. Too bad.

Another 23 year old on the cusp. 6'1 207 according to hockeydb .
Over 40 points a season in the AHL.

If I had to wager, he's going to push hard for that 4th line lw spot.

118 pim two or three seasons ago.

Shrug.

Change of scenario move (for both guys). Another guy to compete for the 12th/13th/14th forward spot.

Granlund - 2011 45th pick
Shinkaruk - 2013 24th pick
Rychel - 2013 19th pick

this is like when that guy started with a paper clip and kept trading it until it turned into a house. in a couple of seasons we are going to end up with McDavid or MacKinnon from the Granlund pick.
