Default Ask a mechanic thread... Q & A with an ACTUAL mechanic!

Hey guys and gals.

I appreciate all the inquiries I get from everyone on the site regarding their new and used car purchases, financing, warranties etc.... As more of a hobby mechanic myself, I am very limited in my ability to answer technical questions more than the very basics.

Would you guys like to see a general 'ask a mechanic thread'? One of my techs who lurks may be open to fielding inquiries from you guys, AS LONG AS IT STAYS CIVIL.

Just feeling it out before I release him to the hounds.

Update: The good TOTO Flames has agreed to field your questions.

Please be nice.

And please be patient.

He is a busy guy foremanning our shop. But he's a wealth of knowledge and a straight shooter. If the answer isn't what you'd like to hear, remember, he didn't build your car!

I've got this Fiero I've been trying to sell with a replaced instrument cluster showing sweet low miles. I almost had a guy on it, but I think he figured out the truth. Is there a way to hide this better so I can offload this thing for big bucks?

Thanks.

I'd like to know if there are any non-terrifying ways of driving my manual transmission car up those steel ramps when I want to change my oil at home?

What? Rev it up and drop the clutch. Problem solved.

Oh...this gunna be good! I am the world's scariest backyard mechanic.

I once fixed a starter motor when out camping with some driftwood, a hammer and a small piece of wire I found.

Whats that you say? Actual good mechanical advice? I see. Carry on then.

That sounds suspiciously like the terrifying way to do it.

Just ride the clutch a tiny bit, you really need two people, one spotter, and you driving.

I drive my manual-transmission car up with no spotter.

I have home-made, wooden ramps with a small wooden stopper at the end. It's not enough to really stop the car and I don't think I've ever reached it anyway as I have enough control that I can stop as soon as I reach the top of the ramp.
