IMO both of those TO goalies are an upgrade but I'd rather trade goalie for goalie so that Parsons and Gillies can be our AHL tandem

I'm also hoping for a 12th forward or maybe a 6th defenseman.

Picard is a decent option imo. I wanted Sparks though...

To pluck from the waiver wire? Weird. The Flames already have too many NHL players at both positions still in camp.

McBackup is a serious upgrade on our back up options. .924 sv% last season behind a not so good Toronto d core.

If the Flames don't believe in Rittich we will know by tomorrow. Curtis McElhinney would be an improvement on Rittich right now, but would just a be a one year stop gap.

Pickard is a lateral move. Unless there is a clear upgrade I don't see the value in acquiring another goalie on waivers. McElhinney may be that, but the Flames would set themselves in a position of having too many goalies.
I think the most pragmatic thing to do is to start the season with what's in camp, and to trade for a goalie if necessary after actually seeing Flames goalies in game action.

I don't care what McElhinney has done recently, I still have nightmares.
Picard though did have some solid backup stats with Colorado, it was only when he was tasked with the reigns for a very bad Avalanche team that his numbers took a hit. And even then he had better stats than Varlamov.
I wouldn't mind seeing him instead of Rittich.

I have no faith in Rittich after his disastrous pre-season, both of these guys would be an upgrade as a backup in my opinion which allows Gillies to go down and play 1a/1b minutes with Parsons.
I'd give the edge to McElhinney as his backup stats have been historically pretty strong .920+ and low 2 GAA. He's been around long enough to be able to sit for 3 weeks and then come in and steal a game.
I do caution the "been there, done that" with Curtis but he's a lot older now and more matured throughout the league, I think he's a solid backup option over what we have. Doubt the flames move on either of these guys though, I think we need a better candidate moving forward to eventually compete to be the #1

Do the Flames still have the same garbage can for McElhinney to sit on?

Loan him to another AHL team or tell him to go find a team in Europe.

For all we know there is already a goalie trade in place but contingent on waiver clear.

Toronto will probably need an AHL goalie if they lose one or both of these ones

Which then requires the Flames to keep him on the NHL roster all year. This pushes three goalies down to the AHL and the ECHL which is FAR from ideal.
Because I don't believe this is a viable option it is necessary to move a goalie in order to acquire a goalie. So, my question is, if the Flames pick up a goalie on the waiver wire that must stay in the NHL all year, then what do they do with Rittich?

Not historically have his stats been like that. Just recently (which maybe should have more merit). 0.909 for his career, all as a backup. 2.86 GAA.
As a backup Picard has been historically stronger with his two years as a backup with Colorado (0.932 and 0.922 in 16 and 20 games, respectively).
