Even gutsier hold there. Thiem showing a big sack, can he break to close it out?

Whether you love him or you hate him, Nadal always plays the most epic matches.

If This doesn't win a major in his career I will be very surprised, kid is going to be a star, even off clay.

Thiem acquitted himself well. A marathon, that could have gone either way

That was epic, I'm exhausted this morning, cannot imagine how Thiem/Nadal feel, playing that long in that heat and humidity. It was amazing. I love Rafa, I'm happy for him, but I also agree that Thiem really was the better player last night and should have won. He's going to go a long way! He's fun to watch, I'm looking forward to the future.

The first set likely skews the stats somewhat, that said, Thiem actually did win more points than Rafa over the five sets.

As for the Nishikori - Cilic match later this morning, I'm hoping Kei can get some revenge for the 2014 final.

The level Thiem had to play at for 5 hours was absolutely insane and he doesn't even find himself with a match point against Nadal. Even if he had won, his challenge would now be to somehow continue this level of play to get by Del Potro and likely Djokovic in order to win the event. The body wouldn't even allow for this kind of insanity.

Full marks to Rafa for really earning it this year if he does infact pull out the win after what was last years gimmie of a draw. I'm skeptical he has enough left in the tank at this point as his remaining opponents have had a far easy road, but if anyone can pull it out, it's him.

To lose the third set after serving for it was the difference in the match, I’d say, especially after losing the second set late. The fourth, up a break serving at 4-3 and miss an easy overhead and a forehand both with totally open courts to hit at, and Nadal breaks. Match point, same thing – if you’re struggling with those smashes just let it fall. Just never felt, after set 1, like he could close out the important moments, even though it obviously went down to the wire. Had to be incredibly frustrating if you’re a Thiem fan and holds the match back from being a real classic. Still, some shades of Nadal / Verdasco AO 2009. Just forehand bomb after bomb. The point at 2-2 third set break point for Thiem is one of the best points I’ve ever seen Nadal play. Which is obviously saying something.

All of a sudden looking like a very easy path for Novak. Millman instead of Federer, an exhausted Cilic/Nishikori, then an exhausted DelPo/Nadal. You'd have to consider him a pretty strong favorite now.

Nishikori breaks Cilic to take set 5 6-4 and exacts some revenge for the 2014 US Open final.
