I think Ottawa has to send him back just to have a positive culture to grow in, as it's surely not going to be a great place to be in Ottawa this year. He'll be back there with another Sens prospect in Alex Formenton at least, and those two could be holding big roles on that team this year.

The Sens could easily have the ship turned around to playoff challenger in 2 seasons if they get a haul for Karlsson and Duchene sticks around with similar 60+ point production for the next few years.

Unlike many teams on the downward spiral, Ottawa has a handful of of young, manageable, high end talent and some cap space to work with.

But they have the option to send him to the AHL too. Not sure if the OHL would be a better option. He's still a kid so maybe London will be his best option.

Personally, I think a year of junior would be better for his development

My first thought was he will never sign with such a dumpster fire. But he like his brother seems to have more competitive and leadership juices than most.

Another way of looking at is that he might think he could be a leader and key guy on a team that is about to be gutted.

Who was the last top-5 pick to refuse to sign with the team that drafted him? I think it was Wheeler.

A Tkachuk wouldn't miss four years of pro hockey just to not sign with the Senators.

Umm, yeah. There's no "competitive and leadership juices" needed to realize that not signing with the Sens now would cost him many millions of dollars in earnings as he delays his pro career by three years, and in turn pushes back the dates he becomes an RFA and a UFA.
