Even things that shouldn't work out well for them are.
Oliver Ekman-Larsson looks like a solid top 4 defender again, and he's added 8 goals and 21 points in 42 games, making him their top scoring defenseman. I hated that signing the moment it happened, but he's been way better than expected. Even Kulikov looks okay out there. This was a defensive group that was supposed to be god awful this year, especially with Ekblad and Montour out so long to start. Somehow they're 2nd overall in the league in GA/G.
Everything's coming up Millhouse!

I dont think we have a barkov comparable on this team.
And I think most posters, including the rebuild group, would be okay if we acquired a 24 year old 100 point player signed for 8 years for a couple of UFAs and a 1st.
I would like to rebuild. But I would be fully okay if they trade lindholm, hanifin and tanev and flipped some assets for zegras.

I hope the Conroy picked up on that, and has some more targets in mind like Sharangovich.

I don't think this strategy is anything new. All teams want to do this, but you need pro scouts that can identify players with more upside than they are showing and can still turn it around. That is easier said than done.
Calgary's problem is they have made some stabs at guys over the years, and were wrong more than they were right. Curtis Lazar for a second rounder was an example where they thought he'd blossom in a new environment, but were wrong.
Ironically, Cory Stillman for Craig Conroy was one of those trades that paid off. At the time, everyone was mad they made it. They traded one of their few scorers for a grinder. However Conroy blossomed and the Flames won that deal.

Yeah guys it's a total mystery why Florida has no trouble building by acquiring good young players while calgary doesn't have success. Real head scratcher.

Lindholm, Hanifin, and Sharangovich would like you to explain why you say Calgary doesn't have success at acquiring good young players.

Florida who didn't win a playoff round between 1996 and 2022?
nobody can build like them I guess
Tkachuk was 100% geography though as I sit in my 16 degree basement with the heat on lol

I've never seen anyone say it's impossible. Improbable yes because Flordia is an exception not the norm. Not to mention Barkov and Ekblad are 1OA and 2OA picks and massive parts of their team. So even if you're the very best in the league at finding players like Florida, you're likely not a contender without Barkov and Ekblad. So it basically proves my point. Not to mention, a 3rd OA allowed them to get Tkachuk. Seems like those top picks were pretty vital to building that team. A Florida with no Barkov, Ekblad, Tkachuk, are they even a playoff team? Maybe a bubble team. Sounds familiar.

I'm okay with the risk of an extended rebuild. I don't think it's any worse than what they're doing now. I think the probability for a top 5 team to emerge is higher.

It proves nothing (other than the fact that there is no single blueprint), but is yet another example of molding the specific circumstances to fit whatever narrative is being pitched

You, of course, are the most objective Flames fan ever.

You'd support whatever direction the Flames take. Like you'd ever stop being a fan lol. You'd be dead first.

Well I am a fan, yes. Not sure about to the death, though. But I do try to be supportive, for the most part, because hating everything they do seems like a fairly miserable existence.
