If he was really chasing that, he would have signed elsewhere.

I look at Thonton signing and wish this is how the Flames would have handled Iggy.

I don't think this was ever an option.

It's San Jose or bust for Jumbo.
If one year they said to him "Sorry Joe, we need to make room for this young up and comers". Joe would be all like "Have fun not winning the cup because you don't have me....".
Of course he'd probably say that in the media and then the Sharks Legend would be forever scorned by the San Joseians (San Josites? San Joseers?) and 35 years down the road when the lose again, they'll all be like. The Jumbo Curse lives on!

I know, but I wish there would have been a way. Just keep paying him accordingly as he slid down the depth chart.

He could have gotten a bit more but he isn't just playing for the love of the game
Surprised so many Flames fans like this guy after saying things like
"We own this town" to Flames players and losing his #### when Bennett has the audacity to make a legal hit against one of their players.

Here's the thing:
Joe Thronton is a unique player in an idyllic situation: the SJ Sharks are a team that will never experience the sort of external pressures to win that any Canadian franchise will. They are located in one of the most desirable places to live on earth, and the fan base is preconditioned to expect little more than mediocrity and underachievement.
Thornton clearly loves his life in SJ, and he obviously loves playing for the Sharks more than he does any other aspect of his hockey career, and why wouldn't he? Iginla chased a dream when he left Calgary; Thornton has already realized his.

In truth, Joe Thornton just wants to keep living in Santa Clara County, cashing multi-million dollar cheques, and playing hockey as long as his body sustains him.

“Perennial loser.”

We're perennial winners, but the stupid wins aren't cooperating.

We can only wish the Flames were "perennial losers" the way the Sharks apparently are. The cumulative regular season records are close, but they have 80 more playoff wins than we do since they entered the league. Eighty. And only three other teams - Detroit, Pittsburgh and New Jersey - have more.
Though to be fair, they are also third in playoff losses over that same time frame, behind Pittsburgh and Detroit.

Entirely true, and you can't fault him for that either.

The Flames are perennial winners. Measuring winning with things like records, standings, and playoff wins is subjective. We have one Stanley cup, they have zero. Ergo, perennial losers. Suck it shark lovers.

I don’t think you know what perennial means. We are a one time, annual winner... but goddamn it if I don’t believe we can win the cup every year

And I get piled on for saying that winning our Division in the regular season wasnt worth a banner or celebration but the 'Regular Season is important' according to some....
And yet by the same set of standards the San Jose Sharks are 'Perennial Losers?'
Yeah...okay...

True. Edmonton since 2006-7 must lead the league in avoiding PO losses. Or maybe the Yotes. Or Panthers.
