Paul Ranheim. I think he scored like 65 goals in the AHL?

He always sticks in my head because I remember, as a kid, seeing him having big numbers in the AHL and getting excited when got called up. But, nope.
Ranheim scored 68 goals in 75 games that year playing with Fleury in Salt Lake, but his game never translated to the NHL, though he had a decent, unspectacular big league career.
EDIT: I meant to add, guys like these are cautionary tales to keep expectations in check for a player like Pelletier. Fingers crossed, but it's still a big gulf from the A to the N.

Holy flashback Batman.
13 year old me LOVED Rich Chernomaz. He lit it up for the St. John’s Maple Leafs the first year of their existence. He had over 100 points and almost scored 50 if memory serves. They made it to the Calder Cup final that year. Lost to Allan Bester and the Adirondack Red Wings. I had standing room tickets at the old Memorial Stadium for game 6…

Technically it was the good ol IHL
Which is where Paul Ranheim also nearly scored 70 goals one year

I am not quite Chernomaz vintage, but a quick peruse on HDB tells me that he did his Minor league damage in his late 20s.
Pelletier is a rookie... That's why I'm excited. I don't think I'd be half this excited if he put up the exact same points or more as a sophomore.

Yeah a lot of young guys don’t get a chance to tear it up, because just when they start they get called up (not a bad thing). Plus there’s a lot of veteran tweeners lighting it up near the top of the rankings.

Even Ranheim's big year he was 22 and done 4 years of college, and was the secondary player to the elite 20 year old
and Ranheim as pointed out still put in a 1000 game career- and was trying to break in on a team that was about as stacked as they come (as an aside)

Remember Rob Brown? I'm pretty sure he had 600 goals and 1300 points in junior. He was the 80's Schremp! Well at least he played in the NHL later on...

Brown scored 49 goals in 68 games playing with Lemieux. He obviously benefited a lot from playing with Lemieux, but comparing him to Schremp is a insult imo.

Not if he’s being developed in the Oilers system.

I had no recollection of Ranheim scoring 68 goals in 75 games. That is incredible. There are lots of NHL scorers that would not be able to do that in the A, just an incredible season.
His first season in the bigs was really solid and then couldn’t quite replicate that. 160 career NHL goals and over 1000 games is a quality NHL career nevertheless.

Ranheim scored a lot initially in the NHL due to blazing speed and a good shot. Once opposition D-mean figured out he couldn’t handle the puck at speed, his production waned. He used his speed to become a very good defensive forward.

I seem to remember Crisp played him mostly on the right side behind Makarov and Fleury, I think his natural position was LW but shot right, he did have great wheels and a bullet of a shot and everyone thought he was going to be a 50 goal guy but after breaking his leg he was never the same.

Ranheim became a hell of a 3rd/4th liner though. He was one of those bottom six guys that were also important players. He knew he had to adapt and was able to. Kind of like Stephane Yelle, another guy that lit it up in junior and looked like an offensive player in the AHL, but adapted to a bottom 6 roll in the NHL. To say he was "only" a 3rd or 4th line player really downplays how good he actually was in that role.

If Ranheim played much on the right side, it must have been after Crisp was fired. That year, the Flames' four regular RWs were Makarov, Fleury, Joe Mullen, and Mark Hunter, with Tim Hunter often swapping in. Best I can recall, Ranheim spent a lot of time in Patterson's old spot on the Gilmour-Mullen line early in the season. But the only really set line was Roberts-Nieuwendyk-Makarov; everyone else got shuffled around in a desperate attempt to find the team's mojo.
