Bahamas advice

Afternoon all,

Trying to plan a trip to the Bahamas in late October, early November. I know....bad storms there recently but apparently the more southern islands are fine.

We are looking at Exuma, Long Island or Cat Island. I've been told Nassau is awful and worth avoiding, any truth to that?

Basically looking for any advice for the area. Places worth staying, places to avoid, activities to do and areas of interest?

I was just in Miami visiting my friend who runs boats over frequently. He said right now the gov't is blocking all pleasure craft.

In essence he said Atlantis and other tourist areas are structurally fine. However he was not sure if anyone was even allowed to fly there and if not when it wou.

Rumor is there are thousands missing in the ocean not yet found. There is concern about having bodies wash ashore in tourist areas, but that is just rumor.

In short, if there is options I would stay away.

If you can avoid it, it would be smart to avoid it. Why would you want to spend your vacation in the region that's devastated? Unless you do wish to volunteer and help out, of course.

We were in a similar dilemma two years ago after St.Martin was hit with non-refundable tickets and AirBnB reservation. However, WestJet was super-nice about it and exchanged our tickets without re-booking penalties to another destination and our AirBnB host just canceled our booking without an argument and without a penalty.

This kinda indicates those areas should be fine, and it sounds like they would welcome the tourist dollars, so for those suggesting it is a bad idea, that maybe a simplistic view.

Was in Nassau the week leading up to Dorian with the wife and child, we got out the Saturday afternoon before Dorian hit the Northern Islands. As far as I know the southern islands were left fairly unscathed, and resorts remained open.

I've also done Nassau in late October into early November, depending on what you're there for, it's a great time to go. A lot less tourist traffic (aside from Americans on cruises).

Nassau is definitely very touristy, and expensive in those areas, but offers a lot to see and do. If you're more into the nature aspect, like hiking, snorkeling, and just relaxing, I've had family go to Cat Island and say it's amazing.

I guess my first post really didn't answer any of your questions, sorry.

I personally love Nassau, the people are polite and friendly. The history is cool (pirates), the food is great, and there's lots to see and do, like restaurants, museums, forts, a zoo, lots of beaches, and if you're travelling with kids, Atlantis is tough to beat. I'd recommend renting a side by side for a few hours, and just ripping around the north shore area, the forts are close, and there's plenty of places to stop for a beer/cocktail and snacks. If you don't want to drive, you can hire a taxi for several hours, for pretty well the same cost, and they'll be your private tour guide. Make sure to check out the Queen's staircase and Fort Charlotte.
If you don't like crowds or pushy salespeople, avoid the straw market, if you can handle it, take a walk through, there's some pretty cool stuff to be found, and remember, you can barter.
My number one recommendation, no matter where you stay, hit a gas station outside of downtown on your way in, and load up on water. As soon as you get into downtown or to a resort, water is pricey ($3.50-$5.00USD for a 500ml Dasani). Not to mention most resorts charge 12% Tax + 15% Gratuity on everything. Outside of the tourist spots and resorts water is reasonably priced ($1.00-$2.00USD/bottle). Same goes for Beer and Liqour.

They are also a thousand kilometres away from the Bahamas.

Still hurricane season in oct/nov.
