Kylington, Mackey, Kirkland, and Philp were also eligible to file for salary arb, but elected not to do so.

Kylington is really the only other one who might have a case for arbitration, but I suspect he either wants a one-way contract or a higher guaranteed minimum. Arbitration isn't going to help him get either of those things.

This gives the Flames a second buy out window. I think that might be the point of it.

Do the Flames have anyone who would make a logical buyout candidate?

Nope. Unless Monahan is not hurt enough for LTIR but not good enough to play beyond a $3M capacity. You could turn his $6.3 for 2 years into and average of about 2.2 for 4.

Not at all. Let’s say Monahan’s hips post surgery allow him to play, but only at a much diminished capacity. The team could well determine that he’s not a value any more and cut their losses. However, the timing is difficult, because of when they have to decide.

You can't buy out injured players anyways. I doubt Monahan will be medically cleared before the 2nd buyout window ends.

Right on both counts. I’m just imagining a situation where he is declared fit to play, but just isn’t as good as he was. But you’re right, there’s no time to determine that unless he’s already skating for them.

While we are talking about Monahan - I actually hope he switches his workouts this summer. He seems to be getting bigger - really bulked up over the years. I wonder if he couldn't benefit from the idea that Iginla had years ago about getting a bit less bulky and concentrating on getting faster.

I think he could do both. He needs upper body strength to do his job. But he really needs skating technique. Which is probably going to be tough coming out of surgery.

Didn’t he do it last time. Maybe didn’t want to rock the boat again.

Well, technique is something that I hope he - and everyone on the Flames - continue to work on.
He needs upper body strength to do his job, but it appears that he has become a beast to me. Carrying around a lot of muscle sucks up a lot of oxygen and energy. Great for short bursts of speed, but over a shift, you run the risk of depleting a tonne of energy, therefore making you slower over the course of a shift. Same idea why 100m sprinters are usually very buff (definitely helps with acceleration and top speed), but many actually end up slowing down at the 70 or 80m mark (except if your name is Usain Bolt, and you are an alien). The longer the race, the less muscle mass you have. Obviously training as a marathon runner isn't ideal for the NHL either, but I am just wondering if Monahan has become a bit too buff.
Iginla who we could argue needed that upper body strength a bit more as he played a power-forward game, felt he became too big, and started concentrating on being fast, rather than big. That's the point I was trying to make, anyway.
